It may be hard to understand but the Lion clearly won that fight. The cat on the bottom has all the advantage because it can use it's hind legs and strike the other cats underneath. Lions are use to sparring with other big cats and naturally have more skill at it. The tiger appears a bit out of its element here. A male lion would have crushed that tiger. The front legs of a male lion are built for figting off other large cats and a male lions mane provides all kinds of protection. Male lions are so well designed for fighting other cats they cannot even hunt for themselves. Tigers are strong but are not designed to handle other big cats the way male lions are. I wish someone had a translated version of this. Nice clip...

It did look to me that the lion was intentionally rolling onto its back throughout.

Remembering how I've seen them kill large mammals on tv documentaries, it does appear the lion was doing exactly what it would try to do in the wild i.e roll on back, grab throat.

So, I fail to believe that the tiger truly had the upper hand in this video.

What video where you watching? They even showed it in slow motion of the Tiger knocking the lion in the head so hard the loin was dazed and just laid down. The Tiger was hitting the lion so hard it was knocking him around like a rag doll.

What video are you watching? There is no "Him" lion. That is a lioness and probably a female tiger too. That lack of observation makes the rest of what you are sayin a little suspect. and I can clarify some of the misunderstandings in this thread regarding the video since I know a bit of korean...

The place where the tiger and the lion were fighting was a cage in a zoo of some sort (however, the narrator does not mention that this is taking place in a zoo, but he does mention that people come to see the animals displayed there)

And as for those who seemed to haven been outraged and thought that the fight was staged and forced: well.. I really don't think this was an act of animal cruelty...
Both animals, either tigers or lions, fight each other all the time... (don't you guys get Animal Planet?) it's just that the two animals happened to have been put in the same cage.

In the video, the narrator talks about how the tiger (called "Buhm" which means tiger in Korean) seems to be more honorable seeing how it does not attack the lion when the lion is struck down and is defenseless and, yet, the lion continues to attack while the tiger has its back turned (as seen in the part where the lion drags along on its back with the tiger's tail clutched on its paws.)
Yeah... he does sound biased.. but, in korea, when it comes to tiger vs. lion, most people there would favor the tiger. Hell.. I would love to see that tiger kick that lion's ass just because of its awesome stripes. xD

I have seen that video many many times,and have done a lot of research on the Lion vs Tiger thing,and without getting into too many details (because right now I am too lazy and not in the mood to go looking through notes and old computer disc,etc for sources) let me state what I have been able to find out.

first off the video........it is allmost universal consensus that these were both female animals,and most experts that have seen the film (both actual experts who have worked with big cats,and the armchair variety) beleive that,going by the body language of the cats,that this fight took place in the tigers cage,because the lion was clearly intimidated beforehand and the tigress was clearly defending her territory.

this was not a deathbattle,not fought over food or breeding,it was a spat over who would become the dominant cat,and the tigrees clearly won the fight on the ANIMALS TERMS...........not ours,but the animals themselves.

as to the lion vs tiger in a fight scenarios,it is well known by animal handlers that females of the species do not really have any problem coexisting in the same cage/enclosure with each other,or even with members of the opposite gender/species,the problems come when males of the opposite species are kept together,because it is natural that they want to do battle,and it is natural that when they do battle,the winner runs the loser off,out of the territory,but if they are in the same cage/enclosure the loser cannot retreat and the victor keeps attacking,sooner or later resulting in the death of one cat or the other.

most big cat handlers and or/observers beleive the LION to be the better FIGHTER of the 2 species,mostly because of the fact that the tom lion has to do battle much more often and is just predisposed to actually want to fight other males,whereas the tigers rarely actually do battle,and when they do it is not nearly eith the intensity of the lion,as tigers are solitary animals/hunters,and to do battle up to the point of inflicting serious injury on each other would doom both victor and vanquished to death by starvation,because they could no longer hunt........where a tom Lion will indded fight even if he incurs serious injury,because he isn't the one who does the hunting in the first place,and even if he does suffer injuries,he will still be able to eat and deesn't have to suffer starvation.
another advantage for the lion is that he is used to living/operating in extreme heat,wheras the tiger is not,in fact the Amur tiger which is the worlds largest cat lives in frigid climates,and overheats much quicker than would the lion..............just watch how hard the tigress is panting for breath after a few short minutes of exertion,the lion has better stamina which would serve it well in a battle between the 2 species.

the TIGER is considered more powerful and the better HUNTER of the two,and is usually a bit heavier than the lion,and in documented fights between the 2 species (most of which have happend in zoos,circuses,and staged fights,as these animals never croos paths in real life),the tiger has been known to win a few battles,but broken doen the lion wins 7 out of 10 times,he is just better suited for mortal combat.and yes,the mane does indeed protect the lions ital neck/throat area in battle,another advavtage the tiger does not have.

as to the Liger or the Tiglon:tiglons (father tiger,mother lion) are usually quite undersized and predisposed to be allmost allways "depressed" or neurotic,and Ligers (father lion,mother tiger) are allmost allways freakishly big,but are predisposed towards laziness and are often unable to exist with other cats,because they actually refuse to fight,even to defend themselves,and a hybrid cat would easily succumb to either species in a battle.

The problem with the idea of a Tiger fighting a lion is in the natural it never happens. If it actually did IN the natural as in a male approaches another say in battle over food or territory maybe even one stalking the other the Tiger wins hands down IMO. Why the Bengal tiger is not only larger but can be MUCH larger up to 150 pounds larger. They are stronger, they are quicker, faster and are are better leapers and have MUCH greater natural instinct at stalking with stealth and killing. It is a known fact that Siberian Tiger's if need be will stalk bears much larger than themselves and kill them. The idea of putting 2 in a cage is one thing a fight in the natural I do not give the lion much of a chance. As far as a siberian tiger fighting a lion it will never happen but physically it is not even close the Siberian is MUCH larger and stronger. In that video the tiger clearly breaks the jaw of the lion, I do not understand the cruelty of people, how bout throwing those morons in the cage for a few minutes. Another thing is this Lions go for the throat much of the time the Tiger using it's superior speed, quickness and stealth goes for an immediate kill by breaking the spine whether in the back or below the base of the neck using their powerful forepaw. They will go for the throat if need be but try to break the animal down as the tiger tried to do against the lion.

There are less than 200 asiatic tigers living in a very small and very protected preserve in the gir forest so interaction between lion and tiger is still very rare. The asiatic lion stands less of a chance than even the african lion seeing they are considerably smaller.

Aren't their claws trimmed? I didn't see any scratches nor signs of blood, and when they did the close up of the paw, there was no claws. But then again, I'm not an animal expert and I'm sure when the paw close up appeared, that they were hiding within the fur.

I was almost sure the tiger would win, knowing that tigers are the largest type of cat, but it was a pretty even fight. I really don't know who won that one. The tiger had this one part where it smacked the lion three times in the head consecutively and the lion fell down, but I really couldn't tell who won.

I think that might have been their first battle, but after a couple of more skirmishes, they would realizes fighting other would be futile and a waste of energy. It's not like animals don't fight on their own in the wild, it happens all the time and once superiority is established, the fights don't occur. First off lions and tigers aren't as closely related as many people think. Lions and leopards are more closely related than lions and tigers. As for a liger, most are born sterile in the first place, and are such an abomination that no pride would accept it as one of their own. The only place they would have ever met would have been in India where the Asiatic Lion is virtually extinct now. I'm still not buying into the idea that rolling on the back is a common combat tactic. What good can come of it? The animal’s most vulnerable areas are exposed such as the abdomen and throat. It just doesn't make any sense. Most cats and dogs will roll over on their back in an attempt to display submission. The tiger wasn't backing down even when the lion had rolled onto her back. That’s why the lion was forced to kick while she was on her back. Give me a source that would indicate otherwise and I'll change my point of view.

By the way, if anybody can speak Korean, please summarize what the narrator was saying. That would probably end this debate.

Dude, I dunno, my guess is in order to get ratings or something these zoo workers just played a lot of stock recordings of big cats roaring while these two guys played with each other. Think about it: if these two really were trying to kill each other, the tiger would not fucking go to sleep, nor would they both lie down not more than two yards apart and with their backs turned to each other.
I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time, but my family has two cats--- brother and sister---and when they wrestle with each other, they look almost exactly like these two. My guess was this was just for fun and because they are big cats it probably looked a lot more violent than it really was. The tiger kind of looked like he didn't want to play though, so I think that's why he smacked the lion so damn hard in that one part. If that was real blood in that one scene, my guess would be one of them accidentally split the other's lip with a swipe of the paw that was too hard, or the people making this video put it there to make the fight look more brutal.

If it is, the croc is not dead you can see him whipping his tail but advantage goes to the tiger. If he can stay on the crocs/gators back he's got all day to unleash the beast on the back of his head. Who knew gators/crocs were so slow. Props to that tiger I guess. I guess instead of hunting the antelope, caribu, wild boar. Which we would think would be much easier prey he decides to take out one of the T-Rex's desendants. I bet you hes chuck norris cat.

The mane is for three things. 1) To attract females. 2) It is intimidating. 3) For protection in territorial bouts with other male lions. There is admittedly some debate about how much protection a mane creates but hair does provide warmth/protection just the way feathers, scales and even your skin does. A healthy adult lion would crush an adult tiger of the same weight. The front paws/legs or an adult lion are superior. The tiger here cannot even deal with a female lion. Lions are not the kings of the jungle only cause they do not live in the jungle. They live in the plains of Africa. I hope you learned something.

Your wrong, a Tiger will beat a Lion, in fact I saw somthin like this on the Discovery channel, the lions would not mess with the tiger, also the tiger outsmarted the lions.
