My favorite ball players are guys like Jose Conseco and John Rocker. The job of a professional athlete is to entertain, and these controversial type of guys are the most entertaining. But, i hate Pete Rose, reason being is that hes such an incredibly greedy bastard. Takin steroids is fine, tons of pro athletes do that, and it makes them more enteratining, making offensive comments is fine, that can have some hilarious results. But greed isnt cool, no redeeming value in that.
He was filthy rich as a pro athlete right, but he wants more money so he gambles on the game. Thats pretty bad. Then, he writes a book admitting he gambled, which is something EVERYONE already knew, and he knew that. He wrote the book just so he could make even more money. Thats pretty bad, just a way for him to make more money off of what got him kicked out of baseball. Cashing in on his notoriety. But to top it all off, after all his money making schemes, he still charges money for autographs. The guy is a dirtbag.

Personally I like Pete Rose, he fucked up no question but in comparision to Jose Conseco and John Rocker, Pete really knew the game and if I'm not mistaken was one of the last Player/Managers in the sport. The man knew more about baseball then he did about life.

greed is everywhere, and once you get money, you want to get more and more and more. the whole gambling thing is fine with me. the steroids part is the lame one. i think jimmy said it best when he said steroids are for p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-pussies.

"The job of a professional athlete is to lead his team to victory first, and entertain second."
The point of pro sports is as a source of entertainment. A team is at its most entertaining when its winning. Given that, a pro athlete's effort to win and entertain go hand in hand. An athlete can do a better job of providing enteratinment when they not only make great plays and tons of homers, but also do lots of controversial and or hilarious stuff.

The only professional sport that is for sole entertainment purpose is the WWE. The rest are about displaying person and professional achievement, witch we find entertaining.

Not a sport. More like a tv show where all the actors are stuntmen.

He didn't write a book about gambling, he wrote an autobiography. Lance Armstrong had nutcancer. His autobiography isn't a book about that paticular subject.

Hows it annoying?? This is how its done on almost every other message board ive been to, which is a lot. I actually find those quote boxes worse then the way im doing it. Relax a bit.

Two of the most entertaining assholes to ever play the game.
"He didn't write a book about gambling, he wrote an autobiography. Lance Armstrong had nutcancer. His autobiography isn't a book about that paticular subject."
The main draw of his book was that he was finally admitting that he gambled on baseball. That was the whole selling point, the whole reason why he knew it was gonna be popular.

It would certainly be tragic for an athlete to write a book revealing a secret of his past in order to cash in on interest in the present, JOSE CONSECO, ASSHOLE and I'm glad very few athletes do it.

There is nobody greedier than a professional athlete. Pete Rose cannot get any more money for playing/coaching, or gambling. You can't just expect him to sit on his ass and be happy with his millions. He had to do something else to make money, and writing this book got him that and media attention.

What about charging money for his autographs. After what the man has done, he should be glad he still has fans at all. Charging little kids for his name doesnt get him media attention, its not a way to keep himself active and busy.

Oh, so according to you, breaking the rule in baseball, the only rule which is posted in every major league clubhouse is fine and dandy and is something not to be angry at or to be punished for, but in fact is to be applauded and celebrated and rewarded.
Ignorance like yours is why I don't much care for sports anymore.
And it's not just that Rose bet on baseball games, he bet on his own team, while he was managing. and then he proceeds to lie his fucking ass off about it for over 15 years, and then comes out with a bullshit apology in which he manages not to apologize or appear the least bit contrite.
You and Rose seem to be of the same ilk, and it's not one that responsible and honest people wish to associate with.

The only reason he apologized was as an attempt to get in the Hall of Fame, and to sell some books. He doesnt care if people forgive him or even if what he did was wrong, he just wants more money.

Yes.
But with Rose I don't even think it's about the money, it's that he is ragingly egomaniacal, self-centered and outrageously selfish.

All of you are so quick to judge Pete. I bet none of you live in Cincinnati or are Reds fans either. I am both and no one seems to understand what Pete did for for his team, fans, and city. The guy lived and breathed baseball and was always good to his fans. He was one of the best players ever and a great coach too. He fucked up when he gambled on baseball but he never bet against his team or changed the way he managed because of a bet. He never threw a game to make a quick buck. He had a gambling problem and tons of confidence in his team. whats so damn wrong that, that cannot be forgiven. Nowadays guys do steroids, get duis, beat their wifes and get a slap on the wrist. All of those are worse than gambling on your team in my opinion.
For years everyone has been "come on Pete just admit you gambled" so he writes a fuckin book about because he has a lot to say on the matter and he can use the money. Now everybody claims his admission and apology wasnt sincere enough?! boo fuckin hoo make up your damn mind.
Pete has become kind of an ass in the past few years and he does charge for autographs. That sucks but the guy has been a walking controversy for over 15 years and he has been banned from the game he loves. I think I would be too.

Look genius    , Rose doesn't give two shits about Cinncinatti, all he gives a damn about is himself, anything and everything else can fuck themselves up the ass as far as he's concerned.
He knowingly and willfully violated THE RULE in major league baseball. As I said before, it's the only rule that is posted in every single clubhouse in the major leagues, and quite prominently so you can't start bleating and shrieking, "Well, I never saw it."
So he has been banned from the game he loves.
Boo-fucking hoo.
Who's fault is that?
Pete Rose's.
The fault lies entirely and unequivocally with him.
And his apology was nowhere near sincere or contrite. It was more of the same, "I'm sorry, but despite that minor matter I deserve to be in the Hall Of Fame."
Well guess what, Pete, you are in the Hall of Fame, the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame, and that's the only one you'll ever get into, at least without having to pay admission.

I love how you start out a sentence with "look genius" and massacare the spelling of Cincinnati.
How the hell do you know if Pete cares about Cincinnati do you hang out with him? Thats your OPINION.
So Pete broke the rules and is banned, why are others not banned for breaking rules? People talk about Steriod use and whether or not Bonds should have an * by his record. How hypocritical is it to include a player in the hall of fame who used steriods and doesnt not even deserve the record but leave out a guy who completely earned his record but made the mistakes Pete did.

I understand that the reason gambling is taken so seriously is because of the potential for throwing games. However, there were never any allegations that Rose ever bet against his own team. He may have been an asshole, but he was much too intense of a competitor to ever do something like that.
Consider how someone like Sosa is treated today. He's obviously a juicer, and instead of being honest and taking responsibility when called to testify, he did his ridiculous "Me no speakee Ingles" routine. Add in the fact that he was caught using a corked bat last year. And no one seemed to give a shit!! He came out with some ludicrous excuse about accidently picking up a corked practice bat and people just said "Oh, OK". It's fucking amazing, the man is a confirmed cheater and everyone just decides to look the other way. Why? Because he's a "nice guy". Bullshit, he's a cheater and should have been suspended at the very least. Rose never cheated and was banned for life. This leads me to the conclusion that Rose recieved such harsh treatment simply because he was an arrogant prick, which is unfair.

I actually live in the southwest ohio area, and am somewhat of a Reds fan. I know he was a good player, thats got nothing to do with anything. The guy is a major jerkass. Treats his fans well my ass. Everyone knew he gambled, only dumbasses wanted to hear him admit it. There was no reason for him to write a book or admit anything, just another greedy money making scheme.
And i agree that Sosa is a dirtbag, i hate that guy too. I dont see how Mcguire and Sosa and Giambi get more heat for roids then he does, when he already showed hes willling to cheat in the past.
But i dont really understand the big deal with steroids. Everyone has access to em, and they make the game far more exciting. Use of roids should be encouraged. Theyre no different then a actress getting plastic surgery. Both are dangerous, both set a bad example for young people, and both help the person to become more entertaining.
If you like Jose Conseco than your opinion is already invalid. Pete Rose is the greatest hitter of all time, how could he suck. If you want to be entertained, go to the circus.
