So a couple weeks ago in english we had to decide on a topic for a research paper. So I figured I'd do one on someone I knew very little about, James Marshal Hendrix. AKA, Jimi Hendrix. So I started listening to some of his music, and reading up about him, and I have come to the conclusion that he is one of the greatest guitarists ever. Everything he does is great. From the funky songs and riffs he writes, to playing a right-handed guitar left-handed, to burning his guitar at the Monterey Pop Festival. This was definetly a great man, and it is unfortunate for him to die. I suggest that anyone who hasn't heard his music before to buy some cd's of his, for he is definetly a great man.

Jimi Hendrix is one of the few people I consider to deserve as much praise as he does. Most people as popular as him are either not so good, or sellouts. Jimi is loved by all, only he earned every bit of it.

Now 'scuse me while I kiss this guy....
Probably the most misinterpreted lyrical line ever
But of course, Hendrix is a god, he was the first of his kind and really the only, though people claim his guitar playing may have been "sloppy" he still beat the shit out of other guitar players and is easily one of the most influential guitar players ever.
blah hes overrated, his music wasent anything special..so he fucked around with a guitar..woooo

But it does. Maybe not the best when it comes to straightforward skill, but when it comes to general musical talent, Jimi is the best. Wasn't that you that said Bob Dylan was the best singer of all time because he was most original?

Are you trying to make the point that just because someone is original and innovative, that doesn't make them any better than others who do the same crap eveyone else does?
Bottom line is this: Hendrix is a guitar God. He totally changed how people look at the guitar. It was his paintbrush, and he painted in murals. Hendrix is the reason several guitarists nowadays exist. Bow down.

No, I'm trying to make the point that Hendrix may have been innovative with his sound, yet he lacked technical skill. For fucks sake, the man couldn't read music.

Toph i love you and everything man but i gotta argue you on this point. You dont need to be able to read music to be a good musician, hell Dave Mustaine doesnt even know basic guitar scales but hes still a great guitar player and comes up with some good shit. When you play the kind of music Hendrix played and many other bands in rock n roll for that matter you dont need to know how to read music.

You don't have to, but it sure helps. I don't like Hendirx for the reason that his music lacks the technicallity it takes to place you from one of the greatest, to one of the best. That is why I hold guiarists such as Frank Zappa and Stevie Vai in higher regard then Jimi Hendrix. They can achieve that higher level of greatness because they have that much more musical skill and talent.

Yea i do agree with you that there are guitar players better than Hendrix out there, but still hes very influential and was original back in his day.
If you like Steve Vai you should check out Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen too, Malmsteen has fingers faster than lightning :p
malmsteen is an overrated fatty too...not saying hes not good though

Rock N Roll does not require a degree.
In my opinion, being able to read music isn't all that special. It's like learning French, anybody can do it. But it takes a certain something to play good guitar.
No offense to Frank Zappa or anything.

Malmsteen is the last guitarist who would be overrated. Maybe you dont know but if you mention his name to most people theyll have no idea who your talking about, as opposed to mentioning Jimi Hendrix for example.

Hendrix is a beast, he is on my top 5 list, it is hard to get on it. If you are wondering my list goes like this
1. Eddie Van Halen - No contest, he is a god.
2. Jimmy Page - He played with a bow, a bow, cmon.
3. Jimi Hendrix - All around good guitarist, along with his flaming guitar antics and such
4. Randy Rhoads - He was damn good for having those messed up fingers
5. Santana - Really, really, underrated, listen to his older stuff, he is good.
But yeah, anyone that would think a modern guitarist is better than Hendrix is... retarded in every way.

i'm talking about to people that know him..you mention him and they always say he is the best blablabla blablabla steve vai, michael romeo, petrucci..they're all better
but hey thats just me

Besides John Frusciante (RHCP), Hendrix is my fav guitarist. Technicality should not matter at all. For god's sake, he was bloody original, influential and made the best (IMO) sounding music. Do I have to go any further? Who cares if he couldn't read music? Anyone can lock themselves up in their room for 10 hrs a day and play guitar and become technical at it, but sorry, creativity is more important.

Excellent Guitarist. One of the best, but Steve Vai is a 100 times better :D
1. Vai

Jimi Hendrix pretty much reinvented the way the guitar was played....FOREVER.
He was the single greatest contributing inovater of effects ever..
On my list of greats....
Non Rock/rock player/inventor hes in the top 10. But thats a span of 80 years.
He re-invented rock as we know it today On inovation...hands down hes # 1.
As to skill level...He was only 27 when he died.
Had he lived ??? ...Think about that one.
There were some very very sloppy things he did.
He lacked discipline.
I can blame him for my sloppy style.... :banghead:
I'd rate him somewhere in the top 10....But the history books aint closed yet

4. Randy Rhoads - He was damn good for having those messed up fingers
Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath is the one with messed up fingers. At least I thought he was the only one...
Anyways, Hendrix is great. No debating. He may not have read music, but hell, he had perfect pitch, so why bother? Also, his tone was great. I mean, who could replace him on The Wind Cries Mary or the Star Spangled Banner. And who could play the guitar with his teeth? He also has so many great riffs that it is impossible to say he isn't talented.
He also revolutionized the use of a) feedback b) the whammy bar and c) backwards guitar.
Vai, Malmsteen, Van Halen, etc... can play with perfect technique and such, but they often lose feel when they are alternate picking sixteenth note septuplets. Hendrix never loses feeling in his music. Same with Clapton, SVR, David Gilmour, Santana, and Page.

I really doubt someone hasn't heard of him. He's a great guitarist. I like how in all the other deaths, there's two sides to the suicide/accident.

<--- Need I say more??
Hendrix was great because he was about music and getting people to listen and feel music, not just from him. His influence goes beyond anyone next to Eric Clapton as every single guitarist hits a Hendrix phase in their career, from me to even Page and Hetfield and Vai. The brother had soul. Good luck on the research paper, there's plenty of stuff out there on him even though he only lived to be 27. He was the greatest guitarist to ever live.
