I think it was droog who said ages ago about people worshipping a 'vision' of Mary on a rock is making americans look stupid to the rest of the world. Well I think that's been beaten by this.

This happens more than you'd think.
No three-year-old has the motor skills necessary to climb a chute like that and get all the way up inside a machine in the time it takes to pick up a damn bottle. And what is a three-year-old doing drinking out of bottles anyway? Isn't that the time to start weaning him off sippy cups?
This woman sucks at real life...almost as much as Paris Hilton.

It also reminds me of a song.
How much is that dumbass kid in the window?
The one with the negligent mom.
Anyway...
While kids can can get into things in much less time than you would think, she had her back turned a lot longer than it took to pick up a bottle. I'm guessing she was trying to score some crack or something. lol

Any of you actually have kids? They're a lot faster than you think. I have one. He's 10 months old. And before I can even tell him "no" sometimes it's already too late.
Kids are smarter than all of you give them credit for, and I doubt the mother was negligent. Perhaps she turned for longer than a second, but that does not make her a negligent parent. NO ONE can watch their kids 24 hours a day. It's impossible. Kids get into things. Kids get hurt. Kids run around like madmen throwing tantrums and there is NOTHING us parents can do about it sometimes. While a lot of times when things go bad I say blame the parents, in this case, I truly doubt she was blowing the cashier or scoring crack.
Shame on you assholes, you make us parents look like idiots. As a mother, I take your comments personally. No, my kid never climbed up into a vending machine. But I'm sure he'll do something that you will frown upon, and blame me for, when honestly, I'm doing my damndest to raise him in this fucked up world. You all should grow up. When you have kids of your own, you'll see how it is.
EDIT: By the way ... the kid didn't seem too traumatized by the whole thing, so exactly how was this negligence?

I used to live in Elkhart, and trust me, the kid is probably better off just staying in the vending machine.

Umm...ahem. Humor forum.
Seriously, Julia. Lighten up. I don't mean to sound like a dick here, but honestly, for you to take that as a personal attack against you is just plain stupid, and I expect better from you. Oh, and yes, I have a child. A beautiful 7 month old girl. And you know what, yeah, I know how fast they can move. I know that I will not always be able to protect her from everything out there, and that occasionally she will get hurt. I also said something to the effect that I know kids can move with startling speed sometimes, and that parents can't always keep their eye on them. However, lets examine the facts here. She took the kid to wal-mart at 3 a.m. I don't care if the kids isn't tired, they don't belong at wal mart at 3 in the freaking morning. My little girl woke up at four the other morning for a bit. I didn't take her to the OTB. (and judging from you logic to take the post personally, I must be insluting MY parenting skills as well.) Going on my past experiences in dealing with people (past in law enforcement) the people who DO take their kids to Walmart or anywhere at 3 am are generally not the best parents in the world. Sure, it's a generalization, but one that has been right more often that not. I may be completely wrong here, but this whole thing smacks of shitty parenting. It could be just a really bad mistake, and shit does happen to good people, and good honest people can make mistakes, but that's not the feeling I get on this particular case.
So, in conclusion, lighten up, it wasn't an attack against you. We aren't making "us parents" (remember, I am one) look bad. We were commenting on THIS particular parent.

Who takes their three year old to Wal Mart at 3 a.m. That is more puzzling than the kid climbing in the machine.
The article said that he had been sick and was thus sleeping odd hours. It's not like you can call up your babysitter at 3am and be all "yo, come watch my kid while I run to Wal-Mart!" :p
Shit, I wouldn't mind getting locked in a toy machine. That totally beats doing homework.
If you have a kid, I assume you have a job in today's world. That's a safe assumption...a job that's probably 9-5 or somewhere there-abouts. If not 9-5, then certainly not too odd of hours that you have to go to Wal-Mart at 3 am. So who the hell with kids is up at 3 am and decides to run on down to Wally-World? I don't care if the kid is sleeping odd hours, you should be encouraging him to get back on schedule, not taking him to play with the rides at a super-store. Plus, if he's sick or recently been sick, why the fuck would you take him out on the town?
I question the abilities of any parent who thinks that's not a bit odd.
I guess I even question the abilities of parents on ebaum's forum. Go play catch or something. And yes, when I have kids of my own, I'll say the same about myself if I still post here.

She might have been taking time off from her job (Edit: Hell, maybe her jobs. If she has more than one, that could be another explanation for her being up at weird hours.) in order to take care of the aforementioned sick kid. If she's a single parent (which is what it sounds like), it's not like she could have her husband run off to Wal-Mart to get tampons, or whatever she was there for. Maybe this was the first time it was possible for her to go. I mean...she's shopping at Wal-Mart. Maybe I'm being too stereotypical or whatever, but I kinda doubt she's got the cash to have someone watch her sick kid for her while she works or goes shopping.

Wal-Mart is hardly "out on the town", for one thing. Maybe she really needed to go to the store and this was the first time the kid was feeling up to going out anywhere. If we're going with the assumption that she's a single parent who is less than wealthy, it kind of makes sense. Besides, you can't exactly leave a three year old alone in your house. The kid climbed into a toy machine...at home he might have been bored/curious/whatever and stuck a fork into a light socket.
Just playing devil's advocate. ;) Sure, for all we know she was meeting her crack dealer and stealing a gallon of vodka. But she could also just be a single parent who for whatever reason went to Wal-Mart at 3am and ended up on Fox's website with her kid trapped in a toy machine.

Sorry everyone, kevin's right, I did overreact. I'm having some personal problems and unfortunately this is the first place that unfortunately took my "outlet" of anger. I don't like to see parents get wrongfully accused of negligence because it's happened to me by someone I know (and that's all the details I'm giving.) I'm just feeling for this woman who was likely doing just fine.
And as far as taking a kid to Wal-Mart at 3 am, maybe she needed to buy more medication or diapers or something, and what other store is open at 3 am? And if she was, in fact, a single parent I doubt she had anyone she could call (or would call, for that matter) at 3 am to watch her son. I would have done the same thing, whether or not he was sleeping. Better than leaving him at home alone.
Anyway that's my more sane take on the situation. Thanks for putting up with my raged rant today.
Ok, I get that she may have had good reason for going there and no one to watch the little guy, but why is she letting him ride the rides at 3 am? That's kind of a time to go in, get what you need, and get home to me, especially if the kid's been sick. Not really a good time to play around.
I can't be to harsh on the Mother. Sometimes these things do just happen....(Well, maybe not every day, but anyway)
What I would like to know is, exactly how the HELL did the kid physically get inside that machine???
It's pretty funny though.....

I do love those machines. I am an idiot and blow my money on them all the time.
Well, I am sure there could be reasons for a parent to take a kid to Wal Mart at 3 a.m., but it just seemed odd. I know kids do stupid things, and I am sure it will make great memories for the baby book. The pictures are funny.
I remember when my brother gave his motorcycle an oil change on the living room floor while my mom was at work. Motor oil on the carpet...he was in 4th grade. Yes, kids do stuff parents can't always control.
I won't mention "my" stupid things I did.

If this kid doesnt climb into the machine and get stuck, nobody nit picks this mother's parenting. Prior to this incident, everyone may have considered her to be a good mother. Nobody knows about her, other than this specific incident and her parenting shouldn't be judged so harshly from 1 bad night. We wont hear the reports about 1000+ good days of parenting she might of had. The kid came out safe and unharmed at the end of the story, instead of looking back and smiling about the funny situation the kid got into, we are too busy analyzing the mother's parenting.

And actually you brought up a couple of points there that I didn't think of.
That said, I still don't trust the lady. :p
Personally I think she was trying to get rid of the kid (see posts about methods of adoption) and then had second thoughts.

I really don't know whose fault this is, the companys that made the stupid machine not making a childs game childproof, or the kids parents for taking their eyes off the kid, in the time it took the kid to get in there somebody could have just snatched to poor bastard.
Anyway... at wal-mart, anything is possible
:censor: Walmart

I hate you solely for your dislike of Wal-Mart, but then you had to censor yourself instead of saying it: fuck.
Wal-Mart is the poor man's Tibet...with discounts.
Seriously, now, how could the company that made the machine be at fault? How about instead of placing blame on third party people, we keep it simple: when she went to pick up the bottle, she should have taken the kid with her instead of turning her back on him. Problem solved. He throws, it, he has to go help pick it up, that teaches the kid a lesson, somewhat, and keeps him from climbing inside shitty Wal-Mart games. What's the manufacturer supposed to do, electrify the inside of the game's chute?

Okay, think of it this way.
Kids like toys. Kids want toys. A kid sees a big box filled with toys. In his mind, nothing else matters but getting to the toys. In his mind, he did nothing wrong. Kid does anything he can to get to the toys.
At that age, kids don't have a full ability to rationalize actions; to fully know right from wrong. Even though his mommy was telling him no, and he knew he couldn't use the clawy thing to get the toy, he figured in his own little mind that getting to the toys another way would be okay.
It might seem like the parents are lazy, pathetic losers who can't take care of their kids, when in reality, it's the kids. He sees something he "needs" and he does everything he can to get it. He will outgrow this behavior, but until then, he's going to do stuff like this, just in an effort to get to what he wants.

Doesn't make it any less amusing.
It also doesn't make the mother look any better. Bottom line is no matter what the case was it still always comes off as her not being able to control her kid.
But I'm still laughing...especially at his pretty pink Pj's.

Well okay look at it that way, but just think: If it were you, would you want people thinking you were a terrible parent because of it? Things happen, and he wasn't hurt.
Now, what I do have an issue with (after re-reading the article) is that she left her kid to go buy a disposable camera... Now that's a problem ...

That's just it, if she thought nothing of leaving her kid in there to go make a purchase, how can we say she didn't turn her back on him for longer than mentioned.
The only way I'd excuse leaving him in there for any amount of time is if it was to go get as many quarters as possible.

A couple of things in the article jumped out at me:
Manges said James has been sick and sleeping odd hours so they went shopping about 3 a.m.
No better place for a sick kid than Wal-Mart at 3 am.
At first, Manges thought it was funny.
"He was playing with all the toys and hanging from the bar like a monkey," she said.
I would have been terrified that the kid could trigger some moving parts and fuck himself up, get his hand or foot caught in a gap and break a bone or even kick loose a wire and electrocute himself. I would have felt terrible that my negligence put my kid in possible danger. She, on the other hand, thought it was funny.
Manges said people leaving the store went back inside to buy disposable cameras to take photos of her son. She bought one herself.
Unless there happened to be disposable cameras and a cash register within 10 feet of the machine, she left her child by himself in a fucked up situation so she could have a "cute" picture.
Conclusion: She's an moron. The kid probably climbed into the machine in an attempt to escape his idiot mother.

This just goes to prove that white ppl really do take their kids to walmart in the dead of the night. I used to go to walmart at like 12am when I lived in Oklahoma and the crackas would be there with the whole family and the kids would be running wild. And Julia not for nothing but it takes time for a kid to climb into one of those machines, trust me she was not watching him the way she said she was. I take my kids shopping with me and I actully watch them & plus they know they will no doubt get the beating if they dont listen. Its all a matter of training kids- kids need to be broken like horses.
Wow, mami, if I ever see your kids, I'm gonna shoot them out of pity.
And yes, that was sarcasm, as I'm sure you're kidding about beating your kids that much...or are you :wtf:
