I have just formmated my windows 98 2nd edition PC,and everything works fine now, except the sound. The sound icon in the corner is missing and when I try to play music in quicktime I get the error message :" you may experience problems playing a soundtrack in "NAME HERE" because there is no audio hardware avalible on your computer ".I have checked the device manager tab on my computer properties and the only ones with a ! or ? next to them are :

-unsupported device
-dual mode:my DSC (which I think has something to do with the webcam)

before I took it in to be formmated the sound worked fine,so any advice on how to get it working again would be great,

thanks

Sounds like you need to load the drivers again.

Did you buy a computer that came with CD's? If so, then just pop in the Cd that has the drivers for it. If not, and you have a soundcard, then just load the CD that came with the soundcard, and install it. You can even try to go to the manufactors website and download the newest drivers for the card.

Thanks for the help,Is there any way to find out what type of soundcard you have??I'll try downloading the drivers if I can find out,

Go to Control Panel, then System. Once the box comes up, go to Device Manager. Take a screenshot so I can see.

I have taken two screenshots of the box so you can see everything in it,I uploaded them to my site to save time and also sorry they are .bitmaps, but I haven't got any softwere to change them yet because the PC's just been formmated.

the first one's at:

Hmm yea, reload the drivers. You could maybe try deleting those 2 items in device manager under sound and video controllers and then refresh. It might find the right ones and install them but you'll probably have to install the latest drivers from a drivers CD that came with the machine or from the website. Look in the computer's manual for the sound card type... or if worst comes to worst you can open the thing up and look at the sound card itself. Or the label on the chipset if its onboard... hope it helps
