Actually, most of these images are colored, since they are taken in either black and white, or a different part of the electromagnetic spectrum, whether it be infrared, or radio. The ones taken in visible are colored to point out temperatures, chemical compositions, or to correct some of the redshift that occurs when light travels for far distances. The farther the object, the more it's redshifted. That's why we look in the infrared a lot, since it's the "visible" light. So to say that the photos are unaltered are more than likely false, however, I have not gone and verified each and every one. Just telling you a bit of the general practices when staring at the stars.
I think by "unaltered" they mean there is no artificial content. Reinterpreting infrared or ultraviolet light into the visible spectrum isn't making it artificial, it is still capturing real data that is there. This is as opposed to computer-generated nebulae or pictures of real nebulae that have been significantly augmented with artificial content. If translating the data into the visible spectrum qualified as altering it, then hardly any of this stuff would be visible. :)
Also, it could be that "unaltered" means something like "as released by NASA" or something. Anyway, it's cool in any case.

this would be the perfect screamer. You wouldn't expect it from this, beautiful pictures of space and relaxing music. All of a sudden a picture and a loud scream.

Some of that stuff is pretty scary, that one picture said the centre had the mass of a billion suns. Thats unimaginable. Very cool though.
By the way did anyone else see a face like a dog with its mouth open in the last one?
And to think that what we're seeing now, actually happened millions of years ago. Wild.

yeha i can't believe this stuff really happened that long ago. It boggles the mind to come to realize that this is real images. Some of the Nebulae pictures almost look like paintings. But this is surely Amazing.

Thats the kicker of it all.. Who knows that those stars are doing as we speak, yet we won't see it's effects for millions of years.
