Will you fuck up your car if you slow down in neutral. say you are heading to a stop sign and you are going around 45mph and you put it into neutral and just press the breaks to stop, would that fuck it up?

And how can i try to be a little faster with manual trans?

No. Slowing down in neutral does not hurt anything.

Manuals are faster because you can shift at high RPMs, as opposed to automatics where the car shifts before the maximum performance of each gear is reached.

And the fact that automatics shift slow as hell, they take 1 full second to shift. Manuals are much quicker, like .2 seconds.

And no, I shift to neutral all the time to stop. Lately I have been downshifting more because my car warned me I need new pads.

Practice. Find some highway entrance ramps, floor it, and try some quicker shifting. Less clutch but not so little that you grind.

or he could powershift? just incase you dont know what that is- hold your gas pedal to the floor, when it reaches the rpm's you wanna shift at, slam the clutch to the floor, throw it in gear, and let off the clutch quickly

I guess it depends what car u have...Some auto's nowadays are faster than the manuals becuase technology is ever enhancing...and braking in neutral is quite faster than braking while downshifting...i've tried this once one a friend's eclipse..but who knows..maybe im wrong

Yeah...sure he could do that, then he would have to pay like $500 for a new clutch in a week. Your only supposed to do that at the track.

No breaking while downshifting is a lot faster than being in neutral.

How do I shift without grinding? i sometimes grind when i change to second gear is it because i changed my shifter? i recently changed my shifter to this wierd red looking shifter because it matched my car but its a little lighter than my previous one, is this a problem?

Thanks for all the replys homies keep them coming

btw i have an eclipse

No matter what you do, don't powershift. Just practice shifting. Your gear is grinding probably because the syncro is worn out. You would have to get the tranny rebuilt to fix it probably.

Maybe your clutch cable needs adjustment. There are a lot of things to rule out before saying the synchro's are shit. We were gonna swap out the synchro's in a t-5 a while back, but changing out the brass crush rings seemed to fix the problem. Good thing too, synchro's aren't cheap. :)

Won't hurt the car, but you might as well downshift to save some brakes.

Would you rather have brake wear or trans wear?

I dont recommend getting lifetime pads. Instead of just replacing the pads once in a while youll have to replace rotors. When im driving i usually keep it in overdrive then downshift to fourth then neutral but if i have a heavy load ill keep downshifting till second gear. But that all depends on your vehicle my truck is heavy so just using the brakes means it takes me a while to stop and pads wear down quicker.

Ohhh srry...i've never driven manual except for my friends car..but i seriously felt a difference going in neutral..than downshifting

How is downshifting + braking faster than being in neutral + braking? If you're downshifting, the engine is still pushing/pulling, and the brakes have to fight that as well as your inertia, if you're in neutral, the brakes are just resisting the inertia, ergo you brake in a shorter distance.

I duno how to explain cuz im not really technical but downshifting + breaking really does slow u down more. Think of it as the friction in the tranny helping u slow down cuz when u downshift ur RPMs go up and high RPMS dont wanna stay high so naturally they will go down making ur car slow down.

i always put it in neutral then brake then back into 1st when i take off.....to me it just seems easier than downshifting stopping THEN going back into 1st. BTW, i have a 2003 corvette  so i wouldnt wanna mess up the gear box or anything like that. Id rather just buy some new brake pads.

When you are downshifting, you don't use the gas, so the engine is just winding down with the transmission, slowing you down. You can stop quite a bit faster when downshifting.

he asked how to be a little faster with a manual, i gave the obvious answer. He said nothing about preserving the life of his car, he asked to be faster, and I offered it.

In english- go fuck yourself you zit faced prepubescent cum stain, you're quite the inspiration for birth control.

By all means don't shift into 2nd while going at 50-60mph just to brake. I'm just saying that you can use both moderately and help each other out. In cities such as San Francisco you save a lot on brakes if you have a manual car, and if you know how to drive it properly you won't fuck up your transmission.
