I am a hiphop head and I usually listen to artists like Immortal Technique, Common, and Talib Kweli. But I am starting to get more into Rock. I already have a large collection of classic rock. I am more intersted in good song writing and lyrics then I am with vocals or music (not like they arent important), so listening to the lyrics is important.
So can any of you recommend and rock music. Rock wise I listen to progressive, aucoustic, jazz/blues-rock, alternative but Im not really into metal or anything TOO hard (but if its good feel free to suggest it). So can anybody tell me any good rock artists from the 90s to the present that I should look into.
Thanks for your help.

Well, A friend of mine is a rap fiend but he listens to a few rock bands like Lit, 3 Doors Down, Finger Eleven, Stone Temple Pilots, System Of A Down, Green Day.
Not my thing, but you'll probably like them.
Also, Try Disturbed. ;)

Give One Minute Silence a try.
I'm generally not into rap-rock/metal kinda shit, but these guys were awesome. Good if you're into political lyrics. If you're not sure, start with the last album, One Lie Fits All (http://www.getlyrics.com/browse.php?Artist=One+Minute+Silence&Album=One+Lie+Fits+All+%28Enhanced%29&ID=B0000A3069). (the links don't work on that page, but the track list is accurate) It's much more melodic than the first two, with far more singing instead of rapping from the singer.
If you're looking for a few songs to give you a rough idea about the bands range, start with "Rise and Shine," then maybe "Representing the Poor Man," "Revolution," "Fish out of Water," and "Available in All Colors."

Oh, and Primus. Always listen to Primus.

Haha, stay away from Disturbed.
Older Radiohead has more of a rock touch.

Definately Maybe - Oasis

LOL
try Fantomas.
Actually just kidding, Fantomas doesn't even have lyrics, but they still kick ass more than any other band listed.
Anyways....
Dream theater is good, Faith No More is good, Tomahawk, Primus, Early NIN, and Radiohead.

Dude, if you limit your rock choices to the 90's, you will not only be sorely let down, but you will be missing the entire rock experience.
Go for the 60's and 70's. As cliche as it is to say, it is true. You will not find rock in a truer or more talented form then from those two decades.

Minus the Bear
Not very heavy stuff, not mellow though, amazing song writing, and insightful lyrics.

Queen's greatest hits II. At least i like it.
Shouldn't Foo fighters be represented here? And of course, Live. I don't have any albums to recomend, but starting with "I alone", "Run to the water" and "Overcome" and then go from there.

He asked about new music not 60's/70's although they were and still are way better than any new music around :bang:

The reason I asked for newer rock is because I limit myself to the older rock from the 60s-80s.

none of the new music can compare with the greats like Sabbath and Iron Maiden.
I would STRONGLY recomend anyone who hasnt heard them to listen to Dire Straits. (get the sultans of swing greatest hits album).
Primus, Coldplay, oasis, chilly peppers, smashing Pumpkins, queen and dream theater are all decent bands that are worth trying but you will find that some you like and some you dont.

If you like Rap, you will probably like Rage Against the Machine (Battle of L.A. is their best CD). If you like that, you will probably like Audioslave, and if you like them, you will probably like Soundgarden (Superunkown).
I like AFI (Sing the Sorrow). Some people might think they are emoish, I don't know, I like them. If you like them, you might want to here Muse, My Chemical Romance, and The Used. They aren't as good as AFI, but they are similar.
If you want great song writing with a mellow sound, I would suggest the Libertines, get their self-titled CD. If you like that, you will probably like The Strokes.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Tool. Just don't buy "Lateralus" first.Even though it's their best album?
As for rock bands, try Mindless Self Indulgence. Most of their instrumentals are electro-sounding and sorta have a hip hop vibe to them.. I think so anyway.

The Jesus and Mary Chain. You won't find anything better of it's kind.

I strongly suggest you check out the Jam Rock scene if you're coming from A classic rock background. Most fans of classic rock also like that type of music.
Some of the essentials:
Phish
Widespread Panic
The String Cheese Incident
Gov't Mule
Umphrey's McGee
moe.
But there are many more.
P.S. - It may seem like i'm whoring Jam Bands in this forum, but i'm so tired of people saying rock in the 90s and 00s sucked.

I recommend Avenged Sevenfold, they aren't extremely new. Their first major album came out in 2002.
Some of the best lyrics and vocals if you are into darker music. It's hard to explain them...they're musicmanship is very good and the way they can flow from soft to really fast and hard music in one song blows me away sometimes. They look Goth but they are actually more hard rock.
Matt Shadows is one of the best vocalists in the rock scene right now in my opinion. He can go from yelling (good yelling) to singing softly and it's really fluent.
If you want to hear some of their best work listen to "I Won't See You Tonight Part 1". It's 9 minutes long and has great vocals.
If you wanna hear some more hard rock stuff listen to the song "Unholy Confessions". Then go buy Waking the Fallen if you like it.
Their new album City of Evil is more softer (they are experimenting) and because Shadows got surgery on his vocal cords so he can't scream anymore.
So go try them out!
