I voted Page. Amazing guitarist.

I also like John Frusciante, but he's not on the list.

My vote goes to David Gilmore on that list, and the one that I admire alot is Robert Frip from King Crimson.

It was a really tough choice for me between Slash and Steve Vai, but I went with Slash because i loved him before I loved Vai.

While guys like Satriani and Steve Vai are technically better guitarists, Hendrix made better music IMO. His songs always sounded so full for a 3 piece band.

Hendrix couldn't play for shit. He relied WAY too heavily on distortion and feedback to create his sound.
My vote goes to David Gilmour. He doesn't suck.

You're missing the whole point of what Hendrix was.
How caome every time there's a poll like this, Ritchie Blackmore is never on the list?

Because no one appreciates how great of a guitarist he actually was. They automatically think, "Smoke on the Water...I can play that and I can't even hold a guitar right!"

Hendrix was a god.

But, I like Gilmour's guitar work much more.

edit: Listen to Machine Gun by Jimi. It's a fucking 12 minute guitar solo.

Keith Richards?

What the FUCK were you thinking?

Why no Hank Scherman, Adrian Smith, Tony Iommi, Rust Cooley or Yngwee Malmsteen?

tough call between great guitar players and great guitar writers, i guess Jimmy was one of the few who bridged that gap. Joe and vai are both better technically but i cant listen to thier stuff very well because its just bad music which is realy hard to play. but then you get guys like clapton who are fantastic at writing great songs but they arent that hard to learn compared to the guys mentioned before.

damn, that was a hard choice. between Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jimi Hendrix, i decided Eric Clapton. not only is he good at guitar, he has been in so many good bands. how i think of it is...
Jimmy Page- Skills
Jimi Hendrix- Experimental, Vocals
Eric Clapton- Skills, Overall band work

Gilmore, Garcia, and Stevie Ray Vaugh are also good.

No Santana? No Nugent?

Oh well.

I voted for Hendrix, because quite frankly, he's the man. You can take your Steve Vais and Joe Satrianis and shove 'em. They're great technically, and I'm sure they'll make great classical artists. But Hendrix and others like him play with their heart and soul. They play because they want to, not just to show off.

Hendrix made the modern electric guitar. Basically. Just like all rock n roll groups today branch back somehow to The Beatles, and how every Hard Rock group branches to Zeppelin, every rock guitarist branches back to Hendrix. That's it. To say that he couldn't play and that he sucked as a guitarist is missing the point. There's a thing called "respect" and Hendrix has earned it and earned it well. That's why I vote for him.

Stevie Ray Vaughn owns too. In fact, blues guitarists are the best.

you need to check out some more Vai and Satriani... either that or learn the difference between showing off and innovating. Im not lashing out at you, but to say Steve Vai doesnt play with his heart and soul is just false.

But I loved "Yankee Rose"! :)

Seriously though, that's always how it comes off, really. I've heard some of their stuff and I like alot of it. But I just don't find myself with the urge to bob my head or anything like that, you know?

My favorite of these guitarists if Page, but I think the best is Hendrix. He had a unique sound and great guitar skills. He wrote good songs and SANG THEM TOO. Page also has depth to his guitar playing and songs. His solos and riffs don't all sound the same.

Hendrix was great. There's nothing wrong with distortion if it sounds good. Castles Made Of Sand is one of my fav songs ever. And yes, Ritchie Blackmore is quite underrated. It's a shame that Vai is getting no love. I would have gone for John Frusciante if he was on there. Ended up going for Hendrix although Page came close for me.

My main point is the likes of Keith Richards.

No.

He isn't. Your list was great EXCEPT for him.

You toss in legends and guitar greats, and throw in a curveball like Richards.

There are so many better options that you could have picked. So many people that are above his league. But, I'm glad nobody has voted for him.

But watch. Someone will vote for him just to spite me.

News flash- the topic of the poll is FAVORITE guitarist. Not who we think are the best. He likes the Stones and Keith Richards is his FAVORITE guitarist on the list. I voted for Page as my favorite but Hendrix I think is the best.

Where did all the Clapton voters go?He is rivaled only by B.B. King as a blues guitarist and cream is one of the best bands ever(Crossroads is an amazing song, thank God for Robert Johnson). Have you ever seen him play? it looks like hes not even trying...

Songwriting DOES count in judging good guitarists. He was sloppy. Who cares? It sounded awesome. "OMG. A guitarist that can make good sounding guitar!!! What has the world come to?" Plus, why was he sloppy? Because not only was he mixing lead and rhythm into the same song (harder than it sounds), but he sang at the same time and was probably doped up whenever he did so :D .
Hendrix probably could play quite technically if he really gave a shit about it. His style didn't require it, nor would he give a crap for technical playing. Notice how the proportion of technical guitarists has increased since the 1950s. It's a trend. It's not that people back then weren't physically capable of playing quickly or with complexity. It just wasn't that popular.
Write a solo with more emotion than Castles Made Of Sand, and come back to me. I'm not going to go around saying that Hendrix is the greatest guitarist (especially since my fav. is John Frusciante of RHCP). But geez, pay him some respect!!!

I voted for Kieth Richards because everyone seems to hate him.

I don't know much about what guitar play is considered skilled, and what isn't, but my favorite guitar player is Tom Morello. I just think his music sounds really cool.
