Voted prog but God knows I can't keep up with all those little subgenres and subgenre's subgenres you rock fans love to create. Metal is metal in my eyes.

I'm new here, do you guys consider Opeth death or prog?pretty much both. they have some prog metal elements and some death metal elements. but yeah they fit in more with prog bands than they do death bands.

I biased my own poll by going with Thrash, because my thrash b0nar is too big to be kept in.

prog, then death, then power.

ConanTL

Prog metal, because Pain of Salvation is prog metal (or so the label claims).

I also like Cradle of Filth a lot. What does that count as: goth melodic black metal?

I don't have a fucking clue. What are Maiden?

Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse, and GWAR...is what?

God damn subgenres.

edit: According to the Gauntlet, they're Death Metal..So there's my choice. >.<

Metallic

Yup, 6 Feet Under and Cannibal Corpse are Death Metal.

GWAR is less so, but it still qualifies.

Maiden was straight heavy metal like Judas Priest. However, Judas Priest practically invented speed metal and are quite close to speed metal. Maiden is often credited with power metal but as far as I know, I think they aren't power metal themselves. I would say that Maiden is closest to power metal though. Their latest albums are venturing into the prog area (but not that much). If Sezril was here he would know. I went with power metal, myself. I can't get enough of it.

Subgenres=good, subsubgenres=annoying

maiden is straight heavy metal, like priest, as the guy above me said

not listed in the above categories, but i guess its a rather unneeded subgenre

sezril would hopefully say the same thing...

other "heavy metal" bands....iced earth, manowar, judas priest, black sabbath(loosely)

Nah, I'll prove you wrong.

Iced Earth = Power/Opera Metal. It's mainly concentrated on vocals, especially when they hit the middle earth phase. For a better example of this, see Demons & Wizards.

Manowar = Wanker 80's hair metal, hands down.

But Priest and Sabbath are hard to classify into a subgenre. Songs like "Painkiller" by Priest shows a very thrash/speed influence, so I would have to go with that. Sabbath, aren't really metal in themselves, but had a great influence in the genre. I can't classify them

Ah, the Wanker metal!

It can be used in two ways.

Wanker as in Cradle of Filth wanker, means that they suck.

Wanker as in Manowar wanker, means that they make you laugh.

Progressive for Dream Theater, Pagan's Mind, Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Symphony X, OSI, Tool

At least I think they're all progressive, Tool might not be. Am I right, oh great metallic? ;)

Heheh. After you finish shining my shoes I shall let you know :D

Tool has some progressive elements. They are a band that is hard to classify in itself. Some song are definate examples of progressive metal, others are more of a different style.

I'd toss them into progressive myself. They seem to fit there better than in another category. The only thing that holds them back would be the guitar work. But the drums and bass more than make up for it.

It is hard to classify though. Their kind of like Meshuggah, they both could fit into their own category.

I think Sabbath definately qualifies as metal. They were one of the first metal bands, back when Metal was a foriegn concept and anything that sounded like that was simply called Heavy Metal. I think that's why they're hard to classify, they started the whole thing before there even were classifications, so to put them into one of these relatively new sub-catagories is near impossible.

Yeah, Iced Earth is power. That was my logic as well for going with speed metal in the case of Judas Priest. Also, I thought Black Sabbath would count as doom metal, but I have never actually got around to listening to much doom metal so I haven't got anything to compare Sabbath to.

That is not progressive metal. That is metalcore.

No, Sabbath are one of the farthest things from doom metal. Doom metal tends to be slow, and very gutteral, something Sabbath was not.

Hate to admit it, but I love the 80s glam rock/metal. I love it, and I don't really care what anyone thinks either.

as Phil likes to call it.

I would call Pantera just straight-up Heavy Metal at it's absolute best, with a definate souther influence. Down was more of a Blues oriented Metal. BLS? Do you mean Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society? I don't know what to call them, but whatever it is, it's good.

lol, actually, I dont know how to classify them, i know its metal, and btw... Why do people hate them so much, I think they have alot of talent, because they like to joke with some songs? Or because you wanna follow everyone else :shuffle: . I hate people who hate a band just because no one else likes them.

Yeaht that's true, I left that one out.

But you can fit most NOWBHM into either thrash, power or wanker.
