Bad brains fans?

Alright I have just started listening to The Bad Brains and they kick ass. But there has been one thing that's been driving me nuts. How in the hell does bassist Darryl Jennifer get that dirty overdriven sound? what bass does he use?

A friend of mine told me that lee perry and bad brains worked together. Either he produce a track for them or they did a track together. He said is was a limited 7". I can't find a record of this anywhere at all on the internet.
Does anybody know if this is true or how I could find out?
