We were all set to buy a hyundai because we can buy new and all that crap. But now we are thinking of just buying something used for about 8,000 instead. Obviously, this opens a ton of doors on what kind of car we should buy. What kind of car would you recommend. I do like the size and shape of the elantra, of jetta's, the mazda protege and similar. I would want something that is about that size and shape, so what do you suggest?

2001 Pontiac Bonneville SSE-i, extremely reliable, HUD, nice design, leather heated seats, and lots of power.

If you want a car that will last you a long time, get a 2001 Lexus IS300. Ive seen them go as low as 10,00o(you were gonna get an elantra for 15?). y dad's 01 is300 has over 130k miles(sheesh) and runs like its brand new. Its a Lexus, so if he keeps it up, like air filters, oil changes, all that stuff, it should go for a good 500,000. Of course, my mom's friend's S10 died at 800,000 miles. So it should last you for a long long time.

It also has alot of power, It can go around 40 when I let it coast. It also handles great, it is almost impossible to wreck one. Great traction. I highly recomend it if you can find one around ur price.

Your not going to find an IS300 that's 10,000. (if you do it will have a TON of miles) 800,000 miles....uh never heard that before. :insane: I would recommend you go with a used 01' 02' Mazda Protege ES. (sporty and comfortable)

I'd say go with the jetta, it's small enough to make driving easy but big enough to fit friends.. it's got the rainbow colored dash lights and I see nothing but nice looking women driving them. :)

I HAVE found a couple IS300's for around 10-15 k. With somewhere around 60 or 70k. Like I said, they are fine cars, and will last a long time.

What's your definition of "a lot of power"? the IS has 215 bhp. Yea, i agree with Viper that you're not going to find a used IS worth 10 grand...plus i've seen Lexus' or "Lexi"(what i call a group of lexus') that have 300,000 miles on them, the highest ive seen. You're only going to see those numbers if you are on top of your maintenance services and if you don't drive your car like you've escaped prison. and 800,000 miles? smells like bullshit to me. I agree with Viper also on the 01' 02' mazda...

Well, they don't have any Mazda Proteges in my area (vermont). Well, they do but it is like a 95 with 150,000 miles. .I found 2 jetta's but incase I don't get anywhere with them, does anyone have any other suggestions?

mazdas cause you allot of trouble after 100,000 miles. id say go with an used corolla or a civic.

or a jetta

even though bonnevilles are sweet pimp rides or city cruisers I feel they might be too big for her.. im thinking she should be in a mid to smaller mid sized car like the jetta.. I also agree with pat for once.. the corolla would be a big enough car to fit people in yet small enough to hit the shopping center and sqeeze into a decent parking spot.

Best thing to do girl is get out there and test drive em..

A VW Jetta is gonna cause you a lot more problems than a used Mazda. Consumer reports show mostly all VW models as being one of the most unreliable.

Now I am leaning towards either a Toyota Corolla or a Nissan (Sentra or altima) I had no idea how many miles you could get on those things. I am assuming a Corolla is better since no one has mentioned a Nissan. Also, we have seen newer cars (02 or '03) with loads of miles (130000-150000) and older cars ('98) with fewer miles (50000-75000). I hate to sound stupid but which is better? I would think the one with less miles but then again the car is older so I don't know. By the way, thanks for all of your help everyone.

A car with less miles is usually always considered better. It depends on the situation sometimes. For instance, I was looking at a 91' Celica that only had 65,000. Most of the time anyone would just buy it because of the low miles, but my situation was if I wanted to get a 14-15 year old car. Anything can go wrong at anytime with an older car. (no matter the mileage) I recommend you pick up an issue of the 2005 Consumer Report. It has a great section on what used cars to look at and which ones to stray away from. Hope that helped... :)

the jetta is definetly not a goodcar for takin your friends or family around, the legroom in the back sucks. i was in my dads friends jetta and couldnt move my feet around the whole ride, and i nearly tripped when trying to get out of it.
