View Full Version : Underappreciated rappers

Remember when if you wanted to be a MC you had to have some major talent. Now rap only talks about four things sex, crime, how cool they are, and how they have more money than you. This is just a list of some rappers that most rap fans need to listen to, they got a lot of talent but just aren't as well known or appreciated as they should be. So if you want to listen to rappers talk about things besides bitches and money, read on. Their a hell of alot better than Yayo, Ludacris, 50, Game, Jeezy, Webbie, ect.
Above the Law- These guys started the G-funk era. They got some cool, laid-back tracks. Check out their first album "Livin' like Hustlers". Its produced by Dre, and most of NWA has a couple verses on this album. If you like it, then get Black Mafia Life, its got a lot more influence from parliament/funkadelic.
Black Sheep- These guys sing that "Choice is Yours" (you can get this, or you can get that, I think you'll get with this... cause this is where its at). That was their only hit but their first album "a Wolf in sheeps clothing" has a lot of other good songs on it.
A Tribe Called Quest- Just got their 1st album, and it kicks ass. Its one of the only rap albums I own that I can play without having to worry about my parents hearing any bad language. Download "I left my wallet in El Segundo" if you don't like that song, than forget it.
De La Soul- These guys are pretty fucked up in the head, and their 1st album has a load of skits on it. Their sound and lyrics are like if hippies had a rap group. Some of its kind of weird and confusing, but if you listen to the lyrics you'll see they come with a positive message. Defintely listen to their album "3 feet high and rising."
Ice-T- Most people know OF Ice-T but they don't listen to him. For the most part, I HATE gangsta rap, and Ice-T invented it. But he is one of my favorite artist. He raps about crime, but he does it in a way where he warns you not to do it. NWA made people idolize crime, but Ice-T lived the life and warns people about his mistakes. He also speaks about politics a lot. Listen to "Freedom of Speech" and then pick up his 3rd album THE ICEBERG.
MC Shan- If your a fan of KRS-ONE don't let it stop you from listening to "Down By Law." He's got some real positive statements in some of his songs. The last verse of "The Bridge" applys a lot to High School students. It warns you about drugs and not letting people get inside your head and bring you off your focus. His first album has some hard hitting drums too. http://music.yahoo.com/ar-256006-videos--MC-Shan go there to see one of his videos.
Public Enemy-If you don't know them, get your ass to Best Buy and just buy every album of theirs you can (except greatest missess, that album sucked donkey nuts).
Do yourself a favor and listen to these true rappers.

Ice-T is alright. I would add Kurtis Blow and Grandmaster Flash.
I figured most people nowadays wouldn't like Flash because he has that huge Disco influence. I only know on Kurtis Blow song Basketball, but I hear he's one of the best.
The only song I know by Kottonmouth kings is Suburban life, but i'll make sure I check out more.

well i dont think chamillionaire is underappreciated but his lyrics are really good.he may talk about sex and girls and cars but he doesnt claim to be a gangster and he deosnt talk about how much ice he has in his grill like dyke jones.what im trying to say is that his lyrics are actually really positive

I wasn't really felling any of the rappers on your list but I can't say they aren't talented. And Public Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest are far from underapreciated (IMO they are over rated) there CDs always make the top of any greatest hip-hop cd's of all times list and I think I say them on Rollingstones 500 greatest Cd's of all time list too (but I guess they are underappreciated by the average rap listener who don't know about them).
Here is my list:
Fugees/Lauryn Hill
Jean Grae
Masta Ace
Black Thought (from the Roots)
Cee-Lo
Andre 3000/Big Boi (I know that the group is really big know but most people don't see them as seperate Emcees)

What you've just said above is one of the most typical arguments on these boards against rap. While pointing out the fact that the genre holds much talent isnt as bad as saying rap just all out sucks, it's still not correct to a) say that rap is turning into crap because everyone's doing the same thing and b) call talented hip-hop underappreciated just because it's not hitting the biggest.
a) is almost completely wrong. Hip-hop is going far right now, and alot of the things that im into are very current and very original. Madlib, Kid Koala, Dj Qbert, Doom, Mos Def, man...this list could go on, and i know a few people on these boards who can add alot to it. As time goes on, music expands, and alot of artists right now are using that to make very good music.
b) Most of the people who are into the Ying Yang Twins and 50 cent can't tell you a damn thing about any other kind of hip-hop. For some reason or another, alot of people on this planet like some real shitty music that, in this case, takes little real talent. The talented stuff does get alot of respect, but generally from people who know their hip-hop, or put more of an effort into choosing quality, as opposed to people who pick up 50's albums so they can play it at their next party. I've seen much more respect go to Pete Rock and C.L Smooth's 'mecca and the soul brother' than the latest 50 album.

The Roots - Why (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=34W3P4G1)
WHY?? [6 x's]
Sky's the limit so you know I'm gonna rise and shine
I gotta do my thing, I'm kinda getting a little tired of all that's hidden
That's the reason I'm a speak my mind, keep from going insane
Now work with it, we in the last innin'
The world keeps spinnin', my peoples steady losin' while the rich keep winnin'
It's like we neva smilin' and the devil steady grinnin'
killin' what we representin'
Even our children and women, 2K4, livin' above and under the law
Young teen joins the marines, says he'll die for the core
Inducted up into the goverment's war as if the land of money and oil
Funny how ain't none of it yours
I can't sleep yo I'm paranoid, it's code orange
It's far from right, I guess that's why it feels so wrong
To see the world get stripped out of every resource
And people pray to Coca-Cola now instead of the gods
What's goin' on?
WHY?? [6 x's]
Keepin' your head above water, hustlin' to survive
Some people chasin' a dream, others just chasin' a high
Some people blind leading the blind, they chasin' a lie
Some people chokin' backs broken barely makin' it by
But still they workin' all they live, they pushin' for the light
Givin' everything they got to stitch them swishes on ya Nike's
Puttin' pockets on our jeans, mining diamonds for them rings
Rewarded with small change and bullets in the brains
And it makes me feel strange everything we take for granted
At times I feel stranded on this planet of mine
Now should I pull the hammer, clap it out, and laugh about it
Or stand up, be counted while I cast my ballot
When the undertaker's busy and the prison's is crowded
People livin' in fear because they vision is clouded
But the sky's the limit, I ain't cryin' you a river
Gotta move me a mountain, I'm a git up and shout it
WHY?? [6 x's]
When I dream it's hounds on my heels gainin' momentum
I'm tired, can't get uninspired or quit runnin'
I can feel they only inches behind, I escape, I survive
Some how I gotta decide how much I want it
Or is anybody listenin' without a pot to piss in
If I disappear I wonder if the world will know I'm missin'
Who my support system, it's not the court system
Gotta letter it said that you're not avoiding prison
People 'neath the microscope 'cause we defining the culture
They smile and insult you like you shinin' their loafers
Them old heads say we need a modern day Moses
When the leaders is posers we needing some soldiers
It's the X generation, The anger is a nature
Got the writing on the wall so clear that I can taste it
Like a kid sniffing glue somewhere trying to escape
Cause we vulnerable and naked
Gotta show 'em we can make it
WHY?? [hook repeats out]

Ok, this isn't an arguement thread, although I disagree with a few lists, here is mine...
Common, Outlawz, Roots, Sevin, Mos Def (solo), Talib Kweli (solo), Kanye West (although he is definatly appreciated, he should be doubling 50 cents numbers.), DMX, Kadafi, and Hussein Fatal.
I know I missed loads, but those come to mind.
Common, in my mind, is the most underappreciated rapper right now. I hardly talk about music in real life, because most people listen to some gay shit. I would say about 10% of people that listen to rap, listen to actual good rap. But, anyways, I was talking to a kid that swears on his life that Mike Jones is the shit. He was asking who I listened to, and I said Common as one of my answers. He just flipped "Omfg you listen to dat gey nigga? he so pussy. he is such a pussy wannabe rapper." At that very moment, I gave him a look of disgust, and walked away. I was thinking of hitting him for being stupid but....
Outlawz/Kadafi/Fatal, they are some of my favorites, Kadafi is one of the most political rappers, he is real laidback, and has alot of really nice lines.
Fatal, he is just awesome. He makes good music day in and day out.
Outlawz, mostly recognized as tupacs protege's are very good. They are indie, but still awesome. Whenever I let someone listen to my copy of there new or old albums, they always ask where they can get it.
Roots, not much to say, they are great hip-hop artists, really deep, and USE INSTRUMENTS which I think is a plus...
Sevin, the most deep, intellectual, and underappreciated rapper I have ever heard of.
Talib/Mos/Kanye, all three, are out there, and known by many. But whenever I bring up there names I get a retarded responce something along the lines of "Fuck those pussy ass rappas, black wall street fa life!!1!" Well, in my opinion, Kanye, Mos, and Talib are one of the best trio's in rap history. If you can find any three rappers that have been on the same track, you win. (I know there are better, but I said ONE OF)
DMX, probably hard to explain. He has so much heart, I had a video of him rapping infront of some reps for a record company. His mouth was wired shut, and you could hear them just snapping while he rapped. I will look for it.

Agreed completley. The Roots got good reviews, and the performance on the Chappelle show was crazy, so I bought "The Tipping Point". One of my favorite albums yet. Common was an accident. I saw it and remembered reading something about "Be" in a magizine, and decided to pick it up. I am listening to it right now, and it's better than many albums I have. It's because he takes up a different approach to his lyrics, rather than the cliche money/hoes/im better than you lyrics. But, sadly, the mainstream fans don't like the way it sounds, so they decide to listen to music that lowers their IQ. Oh, and Chamillionare is one of my favorites, even though he raps like everyone else, he just sounds better.

Joka, I don't think Common, Talib Kweli, Mos def, The Roots, and Kanye West are underapreciated at all (atleast by real hip-hop listeners). Commons new CD debut at number two and is almost platnium I think, Talibs went gold, and Im sure Kanye is going to go platnium. And anyone who heard their music will say that they are extremly talented (although Kanye is no where close to the other three as far as rapping). All of them have atleast one "classic" hip-hop cd (well not Kanye but very close).
But I never heard about siven or fatal, I will have to definatly check them out

8 ball. Noone knows about him. Some of his songs are deep too.
Yeah sevin is hard to find....I have a few songs on this computer though, drop me a Pm if you want some songs from any of the artists I listed.
Fidel, I said they are underappreciated, by no means are the unkown. I think they should be monopolizing the rap industry right now, Reggie said Mos Def is even banned from BET...
Common, is getting shit sells, he should be going multiplatinum easily, im not sure, but I don't think it even got 4 1/2 mics. Its bullshit, that is one of the most classic albums in the last 5 years easy.
Talib and Mos Def, are starting to get respect but nowhere near how much they already should have.
Kanye is getting some awesome deserved sales, and if Late Registration is anything as good as College dropout, he will sell no doubt.
8 ball is ok, but he gets some respect but its always 8Ball and MJG, although I don't like either of them much, my old teacher Mike Cherry is working with them, and is gonna put out an album soon.
Sevin would probably be big, but he doesn't wanna go commercial.

I actually have a list (VERY long one) of artist who BET has banned, well atleast their new material. And almost everyone on the list is a concious MC and they called their music "irrelevent" to their audiance. I'll post it up later in a different thread.
And I heard Late Registration and me and everone else I know who heard it will tell you thats its better than his debut. And I'm pretty sure Common got a 4 and 1/2 but they didn't give him the full 5 mics because they didn't like "Tesify". I still think they get respect, more so then any other underground artists but your right they should be monopolizing the industry.
And 8 Ball get ALOT of respect in the south, they are legends down there.
I know they do, but I live in california, and I have NEVER heard them on the radio.
I have the list too somewhere, Reggie posted it. It banned a bunch of people who were not satisfying there target audience or soemthing. (the target audience was like 12-19 year old balck females.)
I haven't had a chance to buy Late Registration, but I heard it was nice.
And to elaborate, I think they are UNDERappreciated. No doubt they get alot of respect, but they don't get enough. It will probably always be like this. People follow the mainstream 95% of the time. If BET/MTV just started playing conscious rappers, thats all there would be.
People are closed minded about rap. I was watching tv at my friends house and he was watching mtv, he listened to mike jones, g unit, Daddy yankee, but the moment Talib came on ha said "Man this is gay" and turned the channel. I hate ignorant sluts.
I am starting to even think underground rap is overrated about 20% of the time. People think it is cool to know of someone that other people don't know about.
Sevin has 3 albums out, and Fatal is on Murda inc record label.
But yeah Fidel, most of the people that should get respect are widely known, but not widely liked, because they never give shit a chance.
Fidel_Cashflow
08-20-2005, 07:41 PM
It most be different in California (not too different I guess) but in D.C (where I live) most hip-hop heads over 20 know most of those bands and I never heard one person call them "gay" or "pussies". Even people who don't like them (and I've never heard a person say they didn't like the Blackstar album) will atleast respect them as talented rappers.
Just because your accessible to a mainstream audience does not mean that you are respected. Rakim, KRS-ONE, and Public Enemy haven't been in the mainstream for a long time but they get lots of respect. To be underappreciated you have to be talented and not be taken seriously or respected (and yes there are ignorant sluts who will call them gay but there is always going to be a group of people who are going to have bad taste in music no matter what genre). These artist are underground artists, less notority and fame comes with the title but they still get alot of respect.
And all those artist get airplay down here, especially Kanye his songs are all over the radio, I've heard them play "Go" alot, they played "I Try" some times, and Ive seen Mos Def's videos on MTV a few times. And I see Talib on MTV2 hosting a show occasionally.
And underground rap has its share of overrated people (I personally don't like most old school rappers and alot of the wierder nerd rap that alot of people like).
KRS, Rakim, Public enemy are respected at this time because of previous work.
And this thread isn't about respect, its about underappreciated rappers. They are underappreciated, and thats the end of it. If someone is getting massive sales they are obviously respected my someone. So people being mainstream are respected more. I mentioned sevin, obviously you would respect anyone else you have heard of before over him if you have never listened to his songs. But once you take the time to sit down and listen and analyze it, you will be able to make a decision. But with the little amount of Mos def, Kweli, Common etc. they play on mtv, BET, and the radio, it is hard for people to like them, you need exposure to be respected most of the time. Of course Mike Jones, 50, T.I and others are more respected, they are more heard. If people took the time to listen to real rap, these crap rappers would be nothing...
So, when you hear someone/smething you become used to it, or begin to like it alot of the time. That is why alot of people follow the mainstream, because everyone else does. I always tell people how lame they are because of there taste in music. I am not saying mainstream is bad. But who represents rap right now is really bad.
I agree with you at times, but sometimes you make no sense, think some stuff through before posting again. That second paragraph hurt.

I measure how apreciated someone is by how respected they are as a rapper. Nelly get tons of sales how many people take him seriously. You have your opinions and I have mine and we are just restating them so I will just leave it at that. But I still stand by eveything I said.
That is like saying...
It doesn't matter if Burger king is going out of buisness, it still gets more respect than mcdonalds.
Nelly did get alot of sales, so obviously alot take him seriously. Just because you don't doesn't mean others don't.
Speaking about sucky mainstream, isn't DJ clue's nickname fidel cashflow?

That is like saying...
It doesn't matter if Burger king is going out of buisness, it still gets more respect than mcdonalds.
No, its more like the small Mom and Pop store, people respect them for working hard and giving them something different from say wallmart. Even if people respect the little guy that doesn't mean they are going to win or in this case get sales. People choose the wallmart because its more accesible than the small independent mom/pop store.
Nelly did get alot of sales, so obviously alot take him seriously. Just because you don't doesn't mean others don't.
People buy his albums for catchy hooks and good beats or because they hear them on the radio. These are not the artist that the people in the media respect. You think the AR is going to say "Hmm, lets make 50 Cent into a upstanding gentlement so he is more respectable. Because respect equals sales." People buy them because it's like a form of conditioning, if MTV keeps associating these artist with what is "good" then a group of people might think they are good and they can get away with it because they aren't just selling music they are selling a image.
Speaking about sucky mainstream, isn't DJ clue's nickname fidel cashflow?
Possibly, I have no idea where I heard this from.

I think he mighta jocked the name from you haha, I heard him say it in source I think.
A person is gonna buy who they respect, A small mom and pop store will be respected, but not by as many considering there sales. If my list of rappers are already respected, why do they not get as many sales as you say? If people respect them but don't buy there CD's then that is not very respectful. I never said they weren't respected, but they don't get enough. And I don't think you can hear me, Nelly gets mad respect. Just because he doesn't deserve it doesn't mean he doesn't get it. It is mostly the teenage black females. They don't even like rap 99% of the time. They like dancing, and pre-teen R&B singers. So thats what radio, mtv, and BET play.

Did someone honestly put 50 Cent? 50 Cent and underrated do not go together...50 is way overrated, he isn't good at all. No one mentioned Lil' Flip or The Game! But I don't know if I would say The Game is underrated...he may get the respect he deserves, amazing.

Can you rephrase that?
Well i like alot of music, so i dont know many of the underappreciated rappers. So don't rape me for using this "main stream" rappers example, but songs like Eminem's fight music that get you pumped up before the game. Any of the underappreciated rappers got any up-beat songs like that?
Of course there is.
But when we say underappreciated, most of it is more intellectual rap.
If you want some up-beat songs look towards mainstream..

Not really underrated, just kind of underground. They're well approved, but it doesn't seem like many people know the name.

Underappreciated? Right:
Black Sheep: People usually look back at the golden age and make references to groups like De La Soul and Public Enemy, but Black Sheep hardly ever get a mention. Personally, I prefer 'A Wolf In Sheeps Clothing' to '3 Feet High and Rising', Dres has to be one of the funniest emcees ever.
Cannibal Ox: 2001's 'The Cold Vein' is usually hailed as a classic by the underground rap community, but their album should be ranking amongst the classics with the mainstream crowd too. Shame they broke up after their first album, but with that they've still left behind a legacy.
MED: Mostly know this guy from his guest appearences with Lootpack and various other artists on Stones Throw. I just love this guy's choppy flow, and he can just tear apart any track his features on. His debut album 'Push Comes To Shove' is one of the best rap releases of the year.
People Under The Stairs: Superb Californian duo making hip hop the old fashioned way, but ignored by a lot of rap fans. 'OST' was my favourite hip hop release of 2002 and is full of classic tunes, it really should be regarded higher amongst the rap community.
That's all for now

Ice-t didn't make rap. Eazy-E did. Well west coast that is. If it weren't for him Dr.Dre, Snoop Dogg, 50 cent, Eminem and many more wouldn't exsist in the the rap game

Ice T was around before Eazy E. Besides, Eazy E didn't even write his own shit.
Ice Cube = king of the west. Period.
Amen to that. Ice cube killed tupac on the same song.

Yeah, that fits. I read "underappreciated" as "not respected".

That's exactly why I can't stand rap, because it represents ignorant losers, who cannot use the English language properly, who grab their crotches all the time, and think violence and abuse are acceptable. You say my post is stupid ? Go back and recheck yours. At least I don't type in run-on sentences and can spell correctly.

I listen to metal, but I've seen people act ignorant who listen to metal as well. I'm sure not everyone who listens to rap is ignorant either, but going from my experience, the (C)rap I've heard is very ignorant, and I've seen a lot of rap fans who act that way as well.
P.S. Use periods between your sentences, perhaps people can understand what you're saying better. :)

I never said you were American I explained it because some Americans might think it was our version of Junior High or something like that.
p.s.I have a woman and I don't see why you would feel sorry for her because I think rappers are talented writers :insane: .
Yes a lot of rap lyrics are quite violent but then again there is violent rock lyrics.Try listening to some rap songs like Changes,Brenda's got a baby,Keep your head up,etc.(I realise there all 2pac but i'm listening to his album right now so they popped into my head first). These songs are not violent and have better messages than any rock song.
Now stop argueing it will just get the thread locked and possibly a visit to rehab for both of us.I'm finished with this thread.

Glad to hear there are is some rap out there that isn't violent, but everything I have been exposed to and everyone I know says it's sexist and violent. Ill take your word for it, it's just not my particular genre of choice.

Caould a rapper actually underestimate HIMSELF as an artist? What I mean by this is that one could actually rap but not utilize it because of a one hit wonder song? Since this one hit wonder made him a lot of money he just stuck to that genre?
If so, I'd say Sir Mix-Alot...
Yeah he made a bunch of corny ass songs, but if you have ever listened to a song of his called "My posse's on Broadway" (on the albums S.W.A.S.S.) then you'd know what I'm talking about. He can actually rap, and rap smoothly. I don't even think the song has a curse word in it whatsoever. It's one of my favorite rap songs.
I think he underestimated himself and made the corny booty shaking songs for the quick buck.
And yeah Eightball & MJG are pretty much gods in the South.
