I know there is a lot of flaming about bands people hate and there are so many rules and guide lines as to who is okay. I'm just curious about what bands or muscians you guys deem acceptable

I oretty much will listen to anything except for pop-rock/emo, country, and the rap that has been out lately. I usually listen to older punk bands (70s - 80s) and some rap.

my fair list of mostly uncontroversial bands among most rock music fans would be

-Tool
-Dredg
-Shun (they were a great local/regional act from tennessee its hard to find their stuff but they have an EP titled Michael in Reign that you might be able to locate if anyone is truely interested i will send you the mp3's shun is progressive (not like Dream Theater) but great great stuff
-Nirvana

The only type of music acceptable for discussion on this board is emo. Also Insane Clown Posse.

People in the video forum like jazz, go figure.

Nobody really ever minds if you say you like Primus. I think everybody respects Les Claypool.

I was thinking of that too. That's kind of ironic because nobody I know really takes them seriously. That's pretty hard to do though!

I really wouldn't suggest that you stop listening to your music because people on an internet forum don't like your taste in music.

I mostly like a band or artist with some type of substance, message, or emotion. I like the songwriting aspect more than the musical part (I know that defeats the purpose of MUSIC) although I like both because that’s what makes someone a talented artist. I listen to everything so it doesn't really matter what genre as long as I can hear/understand what they are saying.

hey, dont think ya shit is "poser" shit...its what ya listen to, those artists are relying on people like me and you to survive....i think.
i wouldnt say metallica are a poser band, they might suck now, but over 20 years in the industry establishing themselves as a heavy metal band. not an easy task, look at the shit they played, even back then they were kings, people probably dont like them any more, i dont listen to them much either. But i wouldnt put them down as a "poser" band, they wrote heavy metal, push heavy metal to a new level. Attributers to metal, people just take the last few albums they done and just shrug them off and say they sold themselves out...well i would love to see YOU ( not you soadxx) write music like that, In their time. they've been putting up with the heavy metal scene for over 20 years, TWENTY FUCKING YEARS. Fair enough they try something different, i dont like it much. But when you ask someone to list at least 5 heavy metal bands, guaranteed they will list metallica.

I will listen to almost all music. The only type of music I won't listen to is that ridiculous death-metal shit with people screaming into a microphone and playing extremely loud, non-flowing guitar.

I like the people that say "I'll listen to anything except" and then proceed to list everything except classic rock.

the majority of what I listen to is probably what everyone else would think is ridiculous lol

Isley Brothers
Zapp & Roger
Teddy Pendergrass
The Manhattans
The Platters
Aaron Neville
Chi-Lites
Commodores
Heatwave
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes
L.T.D.
Ray, Goodman & Brown
Al Green
Kool & The Gang
Percy Sledge

I'm a classic R&B/Soul lover followed closely by 80's pop/new wave. But I still dig bands like Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, Led Zeppelin, some Queen.

I like most music and if it sounds good, I get into it :) It's amazing how many closet classic R&B/Soul listeners are out there, especially among the "metal heads". I can't even begin to count the times I've been listening to my classic soul mix and have a metal listening buddy of mine come over and tell me they really like the song I'm listening to. I think the only kind of music I don't really like is when I can't even understand what the hell they're saying when they're screaming into the microphone and it's just overexaggerated. I think a good example of this is a song I heard recently by the band Atreyu. Think the song was called Right Side of the Bed or something... The guitar riff was very catchy and it sounded like it was going to be a cool song but then screaming just ruined it... I just don't understand it... maybe I'm just getting old :(

I'm more into classics than neo-soul but like I said, I listen to anything and everything. If it sounds good, I like it. I was raised on R&B from my mom, Classic rock from my dad, roots Reggae from both of them AND my aunt. As far as genres, it boggles my mind what's out there now.. "screamo"? what the hell is that? List off some Neo-Soul and contemporary R&B artists and I will tell you if I like them. I kinda stay away from contemporary R&B because, while some of it may be good, it just won't age well like the classics have.

BTW, Fidel... I downloaded those Lauryn Hill remakes of the Bob Marley Songs. I thought Redemption Song was good but I was a little let down by Turn Your Lights Down Low. It wasn't TERRIBLE but I don't know, it just wasn't my thing. Thank you for sharing those songs with me, I appreciate it :)

Erykah Badu - I do enjoy Badu but only in moderation. Not such a big fan but I do know where you're coming from.

Lauryn Hill - This is another that I do like but only in moderation. I've just never really gotten into her. I wouldn't say she's bad and I wouldn't say she's great. I think if anyone though, her music will probably stand the test of time the longest out of most today.

D'angelo is DEFINITELY underrated. I thought his debut was amazing.

Jill Scott - I have not heard any of her stuff. If she sounds like Ella Fitzgerald she can't be all that bad. What makes her easily forgotten?

Anthony Hamilton - I've seen him live... well not in person but on TV and he had a pretty good voice and good music overall. I haven't heard much from him but just based on a quick perfomance, I'd say that I'd be interested in hearing more

Maxwell - I have a few of his albums. I would have to say that as far as Neo-Soul goes, this guy would probably be the poster boy so to speak. I really dig his stuff. I've had good experiences with Maxwell's music.

Sade - Not quite classic but not new. Sade rules. Again, I remember listening to Sade as I grew up. You definitely can't go wrong with Sade. I've had even better experiences with Sade's music than Maxwell, she's sure to make the panties drop.

India Arie - Heard of her but haven't HEARD her. I'll try the Acoustic Soul CD and see if I like it.

Angie Stone - same as India Arie but if you don't really like it, it's probably not memorable.... We kinda hijacked this thread... maybe oughta start a new R&B/Soul thread? lol

That seriously pisses me off man. Fuck the critics and the mainstream opinion, they know nothing of the art that is music. I hope they die. :)

According to VH1, megadeth is better than TOOL...lol?
Music is dead to the general population, this much has become obvious.

There is no acceptable music when you're talking about it on a forum, they're are too many people with ignorant opinions for everyone to agree, but I would guess it might be the beatles, or miles davis.

Well I think music should be viewed as an art form seeing as how it is one, and TOOL and a few other bands who weren't on that list are thousands of times better artists than most of the bands that made it onto that list. It's comparing people who have come very close to perfecting their art, to people who use that art for their financial gain. It's not right.

Also, I've studied, written, and played music for 18 years now, so I know much more than the general population, and much more than your typical "music buff". I'm not saying that everyone should enjoy TOOL, I'm saying they should appreciate their artistic value. As far as artistic value goes they blow Ozzie's fucking career out of the water, and they have ozzie at #18 and Black Sabbath at fucking #2. There's many more bands on there that piss me off, I just have no time to go through every single one of them, but Guns n' Roses at # 9 really fucking gets my goat. Most people on that list were mediocre at best, and sounded just like hundreds of other bands before them, they did nothing new, they merely formulated song by song nonchalantly. Fuck that, thats not art, it's ok if you listen to it and enjoy the sound, but lemme tell you, catchy tunes and a good band don't go hand in hand.

Not being rude towards you, I think you're cool, I'm just passionate about this.
