Rugby by far, it's like American football without fatsos and borin interruptions.
I can see where this is going to end up. This topic has been done to death on numerous message boards and almost always ends up degenerating into a slagging match between each side backed by people who draw on stereotypes of the other such as.
Rugby by far, it's like American football without fatsos and borin interruptions.
In the end I would say that neither is inherently better, it generally boils down to personal preference and which one you're more familiar with which for me is Rugby (although there are actually two types of Rugby).

I have seen AFL... That shit is mental, punching someone in the face whos running towards you at 15mph and knocking them out so you win the ball back is considered a good tackle, those guys are nutters. That has to be the most violent sport that after boxing/ martial arts etc etc.
a guy 6'7 315 pounds running into you with pads aint gonna make a hell of a differnece
Most likely, but seeing as very few American football players are that heavy anyway, and certainly the ones who are likely to do the bulk of the tackling aren't it doesn't really make a huge amount of difference
why don't ya put ray lewis, zach thomas, teddy bruschi, or any good running back like dillion or curtis martin on a football team they would destroy those rugby players
Perhaps that has more to do with the fact that they're far more used to the game than Rugby players. Put any choice of NFL players on a field playing rugby against most international rugby sides or even half decent club sides and the NFL team would be crushed simply because they're not familiar with the game (In fact I think there was a cross sport challenge a while ago, I'll try to find the results)
Rugby players just dont have what it takes to be a super athlete....go behind the scenes of football training or go see a college game or high school game and see how hard these guys train to get where they are....no contest :bang:
This statement is just ridiculous. Do you have any idea how hard Rugby training can be? especially in preseason. Apart from that, the Rugby season is much longer, top players can play up to 45 games per year (although they're trying to get this down because of the problems it can cause). If you're talking about Rugby in the US then you're right because most of the decent contact sport athletes will go into American football but otherwise you've done exactly what I said would happen and stereotyped.
AFL? does anyone have videolink to it? or just a link?

I like American footall better. The college game to be exact. I know very little about rugby, so please feel free to correct my ignorance ;) but I think the reason why american guy wear pads is because there are stops every twenty seconds. Most of the tackles are made by men with a good running start. Then you set another play, and get hit with another running tackle...The scrum is more like a muscle contest, like linemen. Both are brutal as hell, but a saftey with a 15 yard head of steam will lay just about anyone out.

There's not much to correct, you're pretty much right. Tackles in rugby very rarely have the force of a long run behind them because the way that the game is set up doesn't tend to allow for it, however you do tend to see that kind of thing with players entering rucks (the pile of bodies that mounts up after someone is tackled). Another reason for the pads in American football would be because of blocking.
The one correction I would make is the comparison of the scrum with linemen. As far as I'm aware (and correct me if i'm wrong) linemen generally work 1 on 1 against their opposites whereas in a scrum you have the force of 8 men impacting into another 8 (If you can, try to watch a scrum impact). even though it's only over a short distance it's a very powerful hit with each half of the scrum often weighing about 1 metric ton (2,204lbs). All of the pressure caused by this goes onto the necks of the front row (3 people on each side).

not really, that would happen if backs arent moving, but they usually are. Whos the best safety in the league, ed reed, rodney harrison? Try looking at jamal lewis getting a running start at them, he would run them over guarenteed, well they would gain yards after contact.

Rugby, easily. I'm sure college american football is probably better, but the pro stuff is all show in my opinion, it lacks any real prolonged intensity because they get to go off and sit down every 5 mins so we can watch a shitty commercial about some shit beer i'd never buy even if i was homeless. Too much stopping, and too much celebrating doing any damn thing you were supposed to do in the first place. If you caught a rugby player moonwalking because he'd just knocked some guy out he'd get strung up by his nuts. When i played rugby we didn't even celebrate when we scored, celebrating is done at the bar after the game. Celebrations on field are for girls and pricks. Get the job done and then toast your victory in the pub, don't prance around like a fucking faerie.
An Aussie rules is definitely the fucking king of insanity. I've seen guys literally dropkicked into the stands in the AFL, its fucking mental.

I don't count irish sports in the regular realms of sanity... they are simply off the scale and seem to make no sense other than in a context where hurting people badly is the main aim... which is no bad thing because i sure fucking love those sports. :D

In My Opinion rugby is a more exciting sport to watch and play. Football is great fun but I find the adrenaline rush from calling plays and developing strategy while in mid play is more exhilerating than huddling and deciding on plays.

i picked football, not soccer, but American football over rugby. Rugby is a great game but it is just muscle v.s. muscle. football is brains, muscle, cordination, organization, and brutaity(not that rugby isn't). but the difference between them is the plays. Football players along with coachs need to develope plays against some of these defensive coordinators that can stop just about anything. thats whre the brains come in. Also, if one players makes a mistake, such as a missed block, the whole play could go wrong. In rugby, one missed block is not as crucial because there are more options you can choose. Enjoi, SHUT UP. you know diddly shit about football. i play starting quarterback for a team. It is one of the hardest positions on the field. U need to learn every play( even if its not involving you), u need to learn to read a defense(2 safteys and the play is a deep pass, u have to either call it off and run, or throw a short pass depending where the linebackers are. try that in about 4 seconds time)
hipocritical
09-02-2005, 07:10 PM
You make some good points in regards to the absolute monstrosity of responsibility put on the shoulders of the quarterback. But lately rugby teams have developed offensive manuvers that marvel complicated football plays. If backs miss a pass or a tackle or any small mistake it is the same result as a small mistake in football.
Plus Johnny Wilkinson can out-kick any NFL kicker.

Rugby fans. Don't hate the player, hate the game. NFL superstars are much better athletes than Rugby players, it's just the game they play. Don't call football a pussy man's sport because one: It's just as hard hitting as rugby or even moreso (the pads don't do anything except keep you from dying), and two: There's no Rugby in American. So all you dumbass European jerkwads need to stop being so ignorant, and all you stupid Americans (which includes me) needs to stop feeding the trolls.
