That was revolting. Not only because somebody was throwing up profusely and uncontrollably, but the wanker who gave him the Ipecac. That was totally irresponsible and out of line. Why? Here is some information on Ipecac:

Ipecac syrup is a plant extract from the ipecacuanha scrub found in Brazil. When ingested, Ipecac syrup stimulates the central nervous system and the stomach, causing the person to vomit. Ipecac’s sole purpose is to facilitate vomiting in an individual who has ingested poison or overdosed on medication. The use of Ipecac is for a single use, and the intent is for Ipecac syrup to never to be used on multiple occasions.

The misuse of Ipecac syrup can cause significant and severe medical complications and even result in death. Karen Carpenter the recording artist who suffered from an eating disorder, actually died from the misuse of Ipecac syrup. The alkaloid emetine from the Ipecac syrup had caused severe damage to her heart, which eventually led to her going into cardiac arrest and subsequently dying. Complications of the misuse of Ipecac include but are not limited to:


Cardiac Arrest

Irreversible damage to the muscles of the heart

Hemorrhaging
Blackouts
High blood pressure
Respiratory complications

Nah, that's what it normally does. It is pretty harsh stuff, but it isn't as deadly as the warning label says. Just not for every day use, it's mostly for if you've ingested something poisonous and need to get it out anyway possible. Even drugs like tylenol can do serious damage.

Note: It clearly says "misuse". By your theory, drugs in pharmacies wouldn't be made because they can result in death if one takes too many. And also, the guy in the video did say it was ipecac. Watch it again.

Yeah, but it could be argued that any use of ipecac is misuse. That shit is vile...it's possible to die just from taking it once; you can go into cardiac arrest, have seizures, etc. There are documented cases out there of people who died from gastric rupture after they took it.

The reason it makes you puke is because it's a poison. It irritates the lining of your stomach and your body's reaction is to vomit it up. Usually, you will only be given ipecac by a hospital if the risk of dying from whatever poison you have ingested outweighs the risk of dying from the syrup.

It's nasty stuff. I haven't watched the video yet, but yeah. I wanted to emphasise how dangerous it is, lest some moron thinks "hey that looks like a good prank!" :rolleyes:

The 20 guys alone wasn't bad, it was the fact that basically everyone else who had even a hint of a weak stomach joined in on the puke fest. Approximately 28 to 60% of an ingested toxin will be removed by emesis if ipecac is given within 5 minutes following ingestion of the toxin. If given 1 hour after, a maximum of 30% of the toxin will be removed."

Here's the recommendation of doses for a child of 2 years and up:

Give on tablespoonful (15 ml, one half ounce) of Syrup of Ipecac.
Immediatly give 8-16 oz of any fluid except milk (kool-aid, soda pop, fruit juice, etc.).

This isn't the kind of puking like you have the flu or you drink too much beer and then hurl. Ipecac stimulates the emetic reflex in your body, and does so very violently. You vomit until it's all gone, and then you keep vomiting for 2 hours or so afterward even if it's dry. It's like having your intestines twisted up like a rubber band. It's very painful and distressing.

Worth a lot more than $500 if you ask me.

I'm thinking that he didn't drink 100% ipecac. Near the end of the video right before he licked it up, he was pretty much done throwing up. He didn't look like he was in any pain. He even laughed. I think they probably put some other substance with just a little bit of ipecac. I mean, you guys have said your only supposed do drink a tablespoon of that shit, and they was A LOT of liquid in that bottle. Enough to where he had to chug it. I think that if he had swallowed that much pure ipecac he would have had to go to the hospital at least. He did not seem to be affected more than a few minutes, which makes me believe it was watered down or something. Ipecac is not as harmful as you may think. It is almost impossible to overdose on it because you will puke a large amount of ipecac up before your stomache can absorb it.

Also the side effects are In addition to the expected effect of vomiting, this medication may cause drowsiness, diarrhea, and stomach ache.

Only in bulimic people there may be more serious side effects with repeated use. That is also not to say the side effects are Ipecacs sole fault but the compromised immune system found with habitual bulimics
