Ok, this thread is my rant to save the Viper for being bashed for the right reasons, so the Viper hater's here can at least bash the car for the right reasons and not things it actually happens to be good at.
1) Ok, large displacement but small horsepower? So fucking what, it is A) under-rated by at least 50 horsepower, probably more like 100 (550-600 horsepower, I mean, is it's real horsepower). How is this true? Think about it - is it physically possible for those aerodynamics to do 0-60 and the 1/4 mile that quickly with so little power? It's possible, but not easily with that weight. The car has tons of power, stop bashing it's fucking displacemnet/horsepower ratio.
2) It's engine was not made so damn big because they couldn't get more power out of it. It was made that specifically to A) Be a classicly big American engine, as it was with Carrol Shelby's own help, that the Viper was made, to become the true heir to the 1967 Shelby Cobra 427. The main reason for the 8277cc engine, is that translates into 505 cubic inches. The engine was built specifically to break 500 cubic inches before the 500 horsepower and torque goals came into play. It's for the image they wanted to create - massive engined brutal monster.
3) It's handling. The SRT-10 can almost keep up with a Lotus Elise on the turns, as proved in the test done by Road and Track. Well, shouldn't that mean the Viper can handle at LEAST rather well? YES!!
4) The Viper has a much better built engine and transmission, performance wise, then most people give it credit for. A car weighing as much as some sedans, getting an 11 second 1/4 mile stock?! Well, maybe it has to do with the fact that it has a power band that stretches (for torque) dam near all the way across the rev range, until it hits about a third of the way into the HORSEPOWER range, and the horsepower range stretches from mid-revs until the very end of the rev range almost!! When putting that much power down all the time, even right after and before you shift, you obviously did something right in the building process, if not in making it reliable.
5) Tuning capabilities. Hennessey Venom 1000TT - 0-60=2.6 seconds, 1/4 mile=8 seconds, top speed=245 mph, handling=Much improved over stock SRT-10 or stock GTS (depending on which car was used as the host). Enough for you? Because it beats most Japanese tuners!
6) The Viper's supposedly terrible front-to-rear weight ratio. This point is just fucking stupid. The SRT-10 Viper, with it's massive 505ci engine in the front, has a fucking 51/49 weight ratio, front to back. If that's terrible, then shut the fuck up you stupid bitches, and lower your standards before you look more like a fool.
Now, as I said, there ARE reasons to bash this car. Here they are:
1) The Viper is NOT A BEGINNER'S CAR!!! It is about as forgiving as a third-world country dictator!!!
2) It is said to be brutal for a reason. I know someone who has driven everything from Enzo's and Zonda's to Viper's and Lotus's, and his view of the SRT-10, is that it is "made for masochists" (his own words). This car is so thrilling to drive, because it is HARD to drive, and really makes it an exciting time.
3) It doesn't have the best reliability or gas mileage. This point isn't too useful however, as who in their right fucking mind buys a Viper when they want a car that is an everyday driver? Sure, you CAN drive it everyday, but as a commuter car, you better take it in to be re-tuned rather often.
Finally, 4) Low build quality, providing a very harsh ride. NOT in that there are tons of defects, that is very important. This harsh ride is what hurts it the most during magazine tests, despite it's low gas mileage and all. It's ride is so harsh that to drive it on the street normally is rather uncomfortable. It was not really meant to be driven except in short periods of time like on a track or "that road" you love.
Now that I'm done, Viper hater's, get it through your head that 95% of you are hating the car for why it's great. Idiot's.
