Was wondering who you guys think is the biggest waste of talent in music. The person/group that has an amazing gift, but is throwing it away for the money or some other reason.
One would be Eminem. Eaisly has some of the best lyrical skills in rap, but he just has nothing to rap about. If he could get some better topics, he would definately go down as one of raps greatest.
Biggest waste, in my opinion, would be Christian Aguilera. Out of all the chick pop singers that came out in the late 90's (Britney, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore), she was by far the most talented. Literally leagues beyond them. He voice is just phenomonal. But instead of getting good songs and proving to the world how talented she is, she takes those shit songs to compete with Britney as the most sexy.

Jerry Cantrel - amazing songwriter and great guitarist from Alice in Chains and now with Cardboard Vamprires. I love AIC, and his music and lyrics he wrote are definitely top notch, he deserves more credit.

Dream Theatre. Amazing musicians but their music just doesn't do it for me.

I think you are in the minority though, because most people like them. Try checking out Scenes From a Memory then tell me you don't like them.

Already own it. It's the only one I own, ironically. I liked them at first, but they got boring really fast. Just sounded like four great musicians each trying to show off as much as possible with little regard for the overall outcome of the song.
Plus the vocals are, for lack of a better word, wimpy. The only thing I could think was "this guy should NOT be singing for a metal band." I think he's a good singer and all and maybe he'd do great in a barber shop quartet, but in this case his voice just didn't match the background music.

Well at least you gave them a try. What I dont understand is why you think they are a waste. You say they are highly talent musicians but when they show their skill, you call it a waste. That doesn't make sense to me.

It's a waste as far as I'm concerned cause I don't like their music. Doesn't mean I'm gonna say they suck and deny they have talent cause they do.. I just don't like their sound. I don't think they focus enough of their energy on making good music. I think they focus most of it on making their music as technical as possible but have nothing really distinguishing them as a good band or as an original band.. all in all I think they're bland. Understand now?

Yea I know what you are saying, but just consider that in Scenes From a Memory only about 4 of their songs are complex and really hard to play. The rest are just wonderful melodic orchestrations. But if you gave it a chance and formed your opinions I am not going to argue with you. We just disagree.

I think all of the great bands of back in the day who had to split up because of band member deaths or just some stupid reason (Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Beatles, CREAM, etc...) all of the surviving bands members or even all are now wasting their talent.

I honestly agree with you. She has a top notch voice, she has somewhat of a brain and she could make a bigger name of herself. She doesn't even need a bigger name she could go be a hot Alanis Morrisette(sp?).

I hear blink182 has a good drummer... but i cant listen to their music so i could be wrong.
some of the backstreet boys have decent voices... only their music sucks the ass and is gay as hell
i would consider the murder of dimebag darrell a waste of talent; his career wasn't over yet and he still had the chance to make some great songs.

I'm not quite sure what the reason its but I believe that quite a few bands that used to kick ass now suck. For example, I'm sure the first thought to everyone's mind when I say this would be Metallica. Back in the days of "ride the lightning" and "Master of Puppets" their songs would be 6,7,8 minutes long with progressiveness, long guitar solo's, and be sometimes entirely instrumental (orion being a great example). But now, IMO, they suck. A couple other bands that seem to fit this bill are Red Hot Chili Peppers (nothing good since one hot minute), and Foo Fighters. And also not so much a band but a person, Snoop Dogg. He was only good back in the days of doggystyle and the chronic. He now sounds like every other mainstream rapper who simply "talks" (not flows) about all his bitches and bling. OK (/rant)

I believe we mentioned another band in this thread that has long instrumental songs with guitar solos.

james labries voice is an acuired taste. but he really stepped it up on Octavarium.

most of those bands kept making music, whether solo projects or just kept going.
i think the biggest waste of talent is everyone in audioslave. especially tom morello and chris cornell

I'm going to have to take a stab at Coheed & Cambria. With the song Welcome Home, they did prove they can indeed rock hard. Nothing else by them sounds remotely close, and sucks hard. :(

I agree sort of. Don't think they suck exactly, just that their sound isn't heavy enough. I did like Blood Red Summer though.
Personally I'd say Axl Rose is a waste of talent. He let his ego fly out of control and end Guns N Roses; now he's making an album that will never come out and if it does, will be shit.
Also Billy Corgan, just because his solo album was disappointing.

Lauryn Hill...wtf happened. She came out with one of the best CDs of the 90's (that she wrote, produced, and arranged by herself) and then just fell off the face of the earth. She hasn't released anything since 2002 and that was an unplugged album (which I loved btw).

Remove Trujillo in that list. He actually can play bass VERY well, and hasn't been on a Metallica album yet.

Here's one. This is only judging from the few songs I've heard from them, but the guitarist in Counting Crows. I mean he was tutored by Satriani for god's sake!!! What is he doing in Counting Crows?

Yeah he's a great bassist. Hammet is a great guitarist, Hetfield was a great vocalist and played guitar well too. Lar$ is a great drummer. My point is, they're wasting their talent on the bullshit that they've been playing recently.

My vote goes for the guitarist of The Darkness. I like the guy's riffs. It's just too bad he's in a band like The Darkness. Plays some catchy stuff but being in a band like that is a total waste of talent IMO.
I always liked Creeds guitar player's solos, pretty cool but damn...even Jesus hates Creed...then Altar Bridge...he just doesnt get to play in a band that could make some real music
I actually do like Creed though :shuffle:

Ringo was never worth a fucking penny anyway. His just some how worked with the band, and his past gave him a ticket to a solo career.

Shannon Hoon from blind melon has to rank up there, the guy was a total wreck. I'm not huge blind melon fan but they were a good band.
