There is not more talent involved in rock. You may say it takes talent to learn all the instruments and rhythms. Rap is just as hard. You have to learn many things about music also. A synthesizer is as legitimate an instrument as a guitar. It's also hard to keep a "flow" going in rap. I doubt you would be able to write a serious rap or produce a successful rap track. It takes a lot of work.
I'm not saying that all rap is better and that all rock is bad. That would be plain ignorance. All I'm saying is that I prefer rock to rap simply because of my taste. When you say rock is just plain better, you're just being ignorant. There is too much variety in rock and rap to be able to call one better. Once you've listened to every single record of every rap or rock artist ever in existence, I'll take you're opinion seriously. Until then, you're an ignorant faggot.
By the way, I didn't vote for rock. I didn't even vote yet.

Not even a syntesizer, a computer, or a "flow" can equal the process, and end result of a truly great rock song.

forgive me for making a generality, but on a wider scale there are plenty of rappers who get record deals and just suck ass. that's one reason why every 18 year old black kid is automatically a rapper and "in the game".
i guess its contrary to what i said before, but the real rappers are great. they can know beats and play a synthesizer fine, and hell a lot of them can play the shit out of drums. all i'm trying to say is that from a musical standpoint MOST rock musicians have a better understanding of musical theory, because they have to know the scales and chords that will interact best with each other, and they have much more composing to do than rappers. basically, rock and rap are very similar but rock has more instruments that have to collaborate and work well together. rap can be just as good, but IN MY OPINION the average rock performer has more talent than a rap artist.
you're entitled to your own opinion too, but i have my own reasons to say why rock is better, and i won't argue with you about it. this is my opinion and you can't change it.

Well, again, you can't say that. Some flows completely suck and some rock songs are great and have taken months to write and coordinate. Some times it's the other way around.

No, no, no, definatly not, not a chance, no way...never
My issue with rap is that it is so hype based. It really doesn't matter if it's a good record, if there is controversy, it's goin' platinum (this is an issue in rock too, abet much less so). I think an example is the Game whose record sucked and blew at the same time, and promptly sold 2 million copies because Game was shot and sold drugs.

Thank you. That was the kind of response I was looking for.
Though, what you said is generally true I must admit. Many rock musicians generally have a better understanding of music than rappers. A lot of rapers do know more than you think though. I'm not talking about some reatarded teenage black kid who's a "hustler," I'm talking about talented rappers and producers who make constant hits. I can flow pretty well, and I know a lot about music. I've been playing the saxophone for 7 years and the guitar for 4 years.
Many so called "punk rockers" don't know shit about anything, not just music. A faggot at my school got suspended for having the anarchy symbol on his shirt even though he didn't even know what it meant. These kids constantly go around whining about how hard life is and how they know so much about politics and current events. They listen to shit like American Idiot by Green Day and think it's deep. That shit pisses my off.

I'm talking about the best of both genres. If you were to take the best of rock music, and contrast it with the best rap music has to offer, You'll see that rap, as a complex form of music, doesn't coincide with rock music at all.

Rock. Regardless of a 'flow,' rock involves way more talent. It involves instrumental talent, much more vocal talent (greater range of notes), and much more insightful lyrics.
I am referring to the average rap song which is just a black guy with bling rapping about drugs, bitches and killing. I can't know about the 'great' rappers, since I don't listen to rap for the most part, so this may seem like a pretty naive response. But from what I've heard, that is all rap is.
Rap can be brilliant, though, when blended with rock, which is why the band Zebrahead is one of my favorites. Check them out.

If you were to take the best of rock music, and contrast it with the best rap music has to offer, You'll see that rap, as a complex form of music, doesn't coincide with rock music at all.If you're referring to the complexity of the instrumentals only, then I just have to say: no shit. That doesn't make rock any "better" and it doesn't make it harder to do. It makes it a more traditional form of music, that's for sure.. seeing that they use instruments and all. But rap is a genre of innovation.. going against tradition while keeping in touch with it at the same time.
Most genres have obvious influences that were only a few steps behind that genre (i.e. blues and country/western are obvious influecnes to rock)... but rap doens't have that. Sure in the earliest form of hip hop you could say that funk was an influence since the majority of records used for sampling were funk records, but it's not the same thing. They didn't just play funk music and expand on it a little, they took old funk records and completely remolded them, to the point where if it was done right you had no idea where the sample was originally from or even what record the DJ was spinning at the time. In this way rap is it's own genre.. credit can't be given to earlier artists that were pre-hip hop for starting the genre cause the first people to be given credit for spawning the genre were hip hop artists themselves.. DJ Kool Herc and the likes.
This is why in my eyes rap > rock.. I think it's a much more original style of music despite the fact that it thrives off of older music. Personally, I find that amazing.

I'm not talking about instrumentals only, I'm talking about the songs as a whole, including the vocals. You know, when they actually sing and stuff. Honestly, I don't think you listen to enough rock to realize how amazing some of these guys voices are. Like previously stated, the range and notes these guys can reach is sometimes incredible. Now rappers, do they have range? Hardly. Guitar, Drums, Bass? Very rare. Turntables? Sure. So I'll give rappers that much credit - They're good turntablists. Whoopdee fucking doo. :wtf: Thing is, I could care less about tradition of music, or how it originated, or the influences. Music is just that - Music. I listen to the music I listen to because It's good, complex music, not because of tradition.
You say the use of instruments doesn't make rock any better or harder than rap? Better is solely an opinion, but rock definitely is harder than rap. So a group of guys writing lyrics, singing, writing music, playing guitar, bass, and drums, and sometimes even turntables, would be considered in the same league as a guy talking about his shitty childhood into a microphone over sampled computer beats?
Hey, If you like the music for the music, than more power to you. But you always seem to have these comments praising rap's complexity, when compared to a real rock band, really ain't shit.

I listen to the music I listen to because It's good, complex music, not because of tradition. The vocals in rap arent as easy as you think.. the majority of people out there couldn't be a good rapper even if they had good lyrics, cause they still would have trouble with breath control and overall voice tone. The only thing they don't have to worry about is pitch. Granted that's a big part of rock vocals, it alone isn't the driving force behind good rock vocals. Plenty of legendary rock singers had less than perfect pitch.
Tradition matters case we are arguing genres here. The main reason that people put down rap is cause it isn't the traditional way to make music, they don't play traditional instruments or have traditional vocals. It's a completely new genre.. everything about it was born in the hip hop genre, that's what I like about it. Of course the music is the number one issue, but the music is directly influenced by how the genre follows (or doesn't follow) tradtion.

Know how I know it's an opinion? Cause you can't prove rock is harder. Who's to say what's harder.. playing the drums or writing metaphors? Nobody, cause they're two different types of difficulty. Uncomparable.
Go ahead and keep thinking that rap is just talking and creating loops on little computers, I'm not even going to get into that with someone who has no interest in the genre. It'd be a waste of time and effort.
Honestly, I don't think you listen to enough rock to realize how amazing some of these guys voices are. You've got to be kidding me. First of all, With lyrics anyone can be a rapper. It's been proven time and time again, that any moron with lyrics and a computer can be a rapper, and become very famous.
They may not be very good at it, but still, you get the point.
Second, I don't dislike rap because of it's lack of instruments, or IMO talent, although that's why I have no respect for rappers for those reasons - I dislike rap because I think it's boring, repetitive, and annoying.
Third, I assure you creating music, the riffs, the percussion, the solos, vocals, lyrics, bridges, verses, etc is much harder than writing metaphors. There's so much more to a good rock song that you can't even compare anything else too. And don't forget, Alot of rockers are as good or even better with words than alot of rappers too, so it's impossible to use metaphors as a defense to rap.
Fourth, The majority of rap is talking over sampled computer beats. But in all respect, I'll mention the small accumulation of rappers that use a bit more than that.
Finally, Don't assume that I have no knowledge on rap, because you're very wrong. I grew up on it, and I'm still surrounded by it. And for someone that takes music very seriously, that's the reason I dislike rap as much as I do.

They may not be very good at it, but still, you get the point.Anyone with a guitar, a couple lessons and an image can be a rock star. What's your point?
Second, I don't dislike rap because of it's lack of instruments, or IMO talent, although that's why I have no respect for rappers for those reasons - I dislike rap because I think it's boring, repetitive, and annoying.Doesn't matter. I can't argue that it's not any of the above cause that's all in the eyes of the beholder, but most of the criticism that comes towards rap is because of their lack of instruments.
Still an opinion. You can't prove it's harder, you just want me to take your word for it. And I've yet to see a rock lyrics that even come close to the complexity of good rap lyrics when it comes to focus on syllables and literary devices. Closest I've seen is RATM and Zack is boarderline on being a rapper anyway.
Fourth, The majority of rap is talking over sampled computer beats. But in all respect, I'll mention the small accumulation of rappers that use a bit more than that. First of all, there's plenty of rap out there that isn't just computerized bullshit. Anyone who has this image of hip hop needs to sit down and listen to some Madlib beats. The idea that it's just talking is bullshit too.. it takes a lot more vocal power to rap than it does to talk. Just cause it's not singing doesn't mean it's automatically talking.
Second, if you acknowledge that exceptions exist, lets here some, since you claim to know so much about the genre.
Finally, Don't assume that I have no knowledge on rap, because you're very wrong. I grew up on it, and I'm still surrounded by it. And for someone that takes music very seriously, that's the reason I dislike rap as much as I do.Kinda like the way you assumed that I haven't heard enough rock vocalists to recognize the talent in a singer with alot of range? Please, let's stop with the double standards.
Besides, I don't just assume cause you're a rock fan, I assume cause your posts lead me to believe that you have no clue what you're talking about. You haven't demonstrated any knowledge of the genre so what do you expect me to do, assume that you do know what you're talking about? That's still not what I believe.

Yeah you can. You don't have to be good at your instrument to be a rock star. A lot of rock stars are just mediocre.. it doesn't take all that much work to learn basic theory. Look at Green Day... look at Simple Plan... look at The Killers. Theory wise most rock is rather simplistic to be honest. Rap is more simplistic obviously cause it doesn't even follow theory, but the average rock song is still pretty simple. Basically, in the words of Gene Simons, it's modern day folk music. And folk music has always been on the simpler side of the spectrum.

Those rock bands are just as real as rappers with no talent who get famous off an image and some shitty lyrics. The key element here is fame. Of course they aren't good, but they're big.
But hey, if you wan't me to name older artists since that's what you people seem to like how about Elvis? He wasn't any musical genius. How about Dylan? How about The Beatles? Besides Harrison none of them were that good at their instruments, and Harrison wasn't extremely good either..

Are we playing trivia now? I give up, which instrument are you referring to?
Those rock bands are just as real as rappers with no talent who get famous off an image and some shitty lyrics. The key element here is fame. Of course they aren't good, but they're big.
But hey, if you wan't me to name older artists since that's what you people seem to like how about Elvis? He wasn't any musical genius. How about Dylan? How about The Beatles? Besides Harrison none of them were that good at their instruments, and Harrison wasn't extremely good either..
Are you saying that bob dylan was a mediocre guitarist? Go litsen to Don't Think Twice, Its All Right. Dylan wrote better lyrics and beats than the best rappers.

i prefer Rock. i just listen to it more. that doesn't mean that i disrespect Rap. i find it silly that people say Rock's better then Rap, or vice versa.

but i have to defend Elvis, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles here. sure they don't have amazing instrument skills, but their lyrics skills are amazing. i see where your coming from, though. Rock isn't just about intruments. lyrics are important to music, too.

Yeah, but what we don't find out is where he got shot. He probably got shot in his damn toes or something. It was probably with a paintball gun too. That damn pussy.
Actually one of those bullets did hit him in the mouth. I don't care how shitty of a rapper he is he is indeed tough.
Also, like I've said before, this thread sucks. It comes up all the time and the arguments are usually the same. They're both good genres and none of you are going to change anybody's opinion.

Yeah dude totally agree. I don't see any talent in rap. I have arguements with my friends determining which one is better. I always win.

I would have to disagree with that.
It takes years to learn guitar. I don't mean all this powerchord shit, I mean theory. Scales, Keys, Chords etc.. You can't just pick up a guitar and be a rock star.
Besides, this thread sucks. Why does it keep appearing?
You would be suprised how quick someone can learn music theory, and I'm positive that I can teach someone to play a Greenday song in one week (although that defeats the no power chord shit but you can be a rockstar with mediocre guitar playing). I've took music theory for two weeks so far, and I can write out scales (well major), chords, read (and write out some) music, and sight sing.
Does that mean that there are no talented rockstars...no.
Anyway...can you merge this thread with the Rock Vs. Rap thread? Better yet, can you delete it?

I can teach someone to play a green day song in 5 minutes. they aren't rock anyway, theyre pop. not even the most dextrous person in the world can play a rock guitar solo without practicing guitar for at least a few years.
Definately Rock. Any Day.
I would expect that from someone with your name, In flames is the shit. i like bullet ride, clayman, and brush the dust away-theyre my three favorite In Flames songs.

What kind of question is that?
The only reason rap has 15 votes is because it's next to Rock on the list, so it's obvious people made a mistake by clicking rap.

No, you didn't. You posted it on a forum you fucking retard tool faggot.
It's a pretty noticeable fact that most of the Hip-Hop enthusiasts on this site, such as me and reggie jax, are a lot more intelligent then those who listen to rock.
The only reason people on this site hate rap is becaus of the fact that they're too busy listening to their Green Day shit to listen to some good rap with an open mind. They're too fucking stupid to comprehend lyrics when they're not set to a catchy beat with some guitars in the background. Rap is composed mainly of words, therefore, complete idiots who failed elementary school will not be able to understand it. They just hear a song by 50 Cent on the radio and think that all rap is like that. That's what pisses me off.

It's pretty damn easy from where I'm sitting. Kinda fun too. Not to change anyone's mind.. just to see how well you can tear their argument to pieces. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose, most of the time you just get tired of typing. It's enjoyable for the time being anyways. Maybe I'm just a nerd though.

Why do you listen to music? Is it because you want to "look cool" or because you like the music? From your post it seems you'd rather just look cool. You have a very shallow taste in music if that's the case. Seriously, think for yourself; don't just listen to music because it's "cool."

What the fuck? This is not a fair question yet. It would be fair to compare rap against pop, but not rap against rock, it's just unfair. It's like putting a deer against a lion, the deer (in this case rap) wouldn't stand a chance.
The obvious choice is "rock".

Well, in my opinion. Rock takes more talent than rap in order to be good. However, I agree that lyrically rap takes the cake, but on skills on using instruments rock is better... so, yeah, that's why this is just opinion... many can disagree/agree with me on this...
And I was kidding when I made that comparison, I don't dislike rap, there are many good raps artists out there (MTV artists; rock, rap, pop, etc. are mainly shit), however, it's just not my style...

i like both rock does invove alot of talent....but rap isnt easy either people rap all tha time and consider themselves rappers but to be famous (in most cases) and to be accepted you gotta be a good rapper know what your talkin about be able to write nice rhymes that "flow" and always keep up for so that the public and shit so tha fans will still love your music .....and you guys are for getting the freestyle parts of rap that takes even more talent you gotta be quick and have some knowledge for that
my 2 cents
I generaly prefer rock because it envokes an emotion in me and thats the point of music for me...
Generaly rap doesnt do that for me...I feel that most brings out more of a negitive attitude than a strong emotion

it depends on what u listen to not all rock is positive it can be negetive to alot of rock (depending on what your listening to) talks about killing pain anger and alot doesnt
rap is the same alot of rap that is commercialized on tv and the radio now is mostly negetive but alot isnt it depends on what you chose to listen to
