On this day (February 1st)...

50 years ago, Felix Wankel ran his first working prototype of the Wankel rotary engine.

Hooray.

Awesome thread, man. Felix Wankel has been quite an inspiration to me, and is definitely one of the main reasons I'm so into cars.

Thank you, Dr. Wankel!

Edit: I'm bored and at work with nothing to do, so I'll go ahead and make a bunch of video posts.

Starting off with How a Rotary Works

Aussies are the best in the world with rotaries (Well, outside Japan)

13B Miata

The Infamous 787B

Yup.

Piston engine goes "Boing boing boing boing boing" But the Mazda goes "Hmmmmmmmmmm!"

Street driven 650hp Rx7

7 second 20B Powered Mx-6

7 Second 20B RX-7

Someone thought it'd be cute to put a 20B on a dune buggy. I predict at least 1 person will die from this.

N/A 13B with one blown rotor finally blows completely after 6 minutes at 15k rpm.
Who said that rotaries are unreliable and can't take a beating?

Little 12A runs an 8-second 1/4

Non-turbo Rx7 runs 8 seconds on nitrous

20B powered Rx8 drag car runs 6 seconds in the 1/4

The famous 20B powered AE86 vid.
Full vid in high quality, not just the shitty quality clip of it pulling insanely hard. It's all in Japanese, though.

I'm like falling asleep at my desk now so I'm gonna stop.

Interesting fact: The AMC Pacer was originally designed to have a rotary engine.

Its a good thing it wasn't built with one, it wouldn't have been nearly as reliable or efficient. I like Pacers, but I want a Gremlin.

An early Corvette design had a 4-rotor engine planned, too.
