man that thing is beautiful, every day i wake up i go to streetfire just to look at this video, as some of you may know, i absolutely love corvettes, i'm the proud owner of one and quite possible could be the proud owner of another, more exlusive vette, but that depends on me. on a side note, what would this baby sound like if it had chambered exhaust like in the late 60's models? i love chambered exhaust but i think it would sound different on a car this powerful.

What is it about american muscle cars that make that rumbling noise?

Is the the cams?

I hate the import cars that have those annoying humming noises...

1. A V8 fires 4 cylinders per revolution, a 4 banger only fires 2 cylinders per revolution. We have more exhaust pulses that are closer together, making for a smoother richer sound.
2. We only have one cam, it plays some part in the overall sound. A cam is usually responsible for the lope that you hear.
3. I hate that noise too, it makes my brain itch.

I've heard V6's make that rumbling aswell. I saw a mustang with blowby cams that made somewhat of a similar noise.

You telling me it would take a V8 to make that awsome american muscle sound?

If so, I'm gonna ditch my truck and buy a mustang

You can't make a V6 sound like a V8 no matter what you do. Every engine has it's own specific sound. I will say that a 4.3 Chevy V6 can sound pretty mean, but nothing like a V8. My friend has a 4.3 in his truck with true duals and no mufflers, only cats, it sounds badass at idle, but at over 2000RPM it doesn't sound very good.

You have a mid-70's 'vette right? If the engine is stock it will certianly benifit from a newer dual-pattern cam, headers and maybe some nice chambered exhaust. It will be better not only in sound but you will pick up around 50hp.

If you like it the way it is, leave it. It is your car if it sounds good to you and has enough power for you that is all that matters.

can you explain to me how it is that cams and exhaust actually makes your car gain HP?

So it'd definately take me a V8 to get that sound... okay

i've already installed the chambered exhaust but have yet to install the super competition headers i have for it, i also want new heads and intake manifold, oh yeah also a carb spacer. here is the vette with the chambered exhaust, i was told that the farther you put them the more backpressure they will create, should i really worry about that and try to have them installed mroe towards the front?

http://www.zshare.net/video/100_4919-wmv.html

edit. oh yeah, i would like to add that the camera didn't catch the sound as it is, to me it soudns too hollow, if you stand right next to it or behind it it has a real nice and low rumble, i'll try to shoot a better vid of it next time, my camera is messing up ever since my girlfriend dropped it into the ocean

The more air you can get in and out of an engine the more power you can essentially make. If your exhaust is very restrictive you will loose power because the engine has to work harder to push the exhaust gasses out. If there is not enough restriction then you will loose low end torque, because torque follows cylinder pressure if cylinder pressure drops so does your torque.

The cam controls when and how far the valves open and how long they stay open. If you have more duration on the exhaust lobe than the intake lobe it is known as a dual pattern cam, these are good for heads that have poor flow on the exhaust side. The cam must be matched to the rest of the engine, just slapping a huge cam in an otherwise stock motor might lose power.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, there are a ton of variables to concider when modifying an engine for power. Everything must match, even down to the torque converter in an automatic transmission car.

From what I could tell it sounds pretty nice, the headers should improve the sound. I have some long tube headers on mine and it sounds pretty deep for being a stock 289.

What do you know about the engine that is in the car?

Some nicer flowing heads, air-gap manifold, holley carb, and a nice cam would make a real nice combo.

http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...00-450&FROM=MG

http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...-50011&FROM=MG

and remember that i also have the super comp headers and the stock carb which has 750 cfm, so should i buy these parts or would you recommend something else?

The Torker II manifolds suck horribly, they are gutless below 4000RPM. That is a lot of head for anything but an all out race car. Forget the carb spacer.

Starting from a stock 350 bottom end I would go with something simple like: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Just add some nice roller rockers, a double roller timing chain, some new pushrods and a nice Holley 650 carb and you would be set.

This could get you near 375-400HP, without breaking the bank. It would make for a great steet/strip car, that could be driven anywhere.

hmm i think i might go with this, would the engine have to be stroked? i want to get the most HP out of my car, thats why i initialy went with the 500 hp head kit you saw in the link. why should i forget about the spacer? doesn't do much or what? also look at the location of the exhaust ports, my headers aren't like that, but i'm assuming the ones i'll order would be different right?
