Food costs are through the roof, fuel is more expensive, homes are expensive to build or buy or rent due to isolation. The only cheap thing is the land but the other costs of living isolated make it more expensive than living in a city.

In parts of Canada or the USA you can really be in the middle of nowhere but when people from the East or West coast of the USA say "middle of nowhere" they mean not the East or West coast. The suburbs of a medium sized city or a town with a quarter million people is middle of nowhere to them.
